I’m still amused by how Jess and I both had the separate comments on the white suit, as his introduction ended, and I yell, “Don’t you know you’re not supposed to where white after Labor Day?” Quite enjoy how you have the comment on the white suit as well. And given how Asmodeus doesn’t make the face at, I assume, the rotgut that Dean was drinking, he clearly has no taste in good booze, so he’s got that strike against him. Reminds me of Crowley being given the drink from Dick, and when he knocked it back, let it sit on his tongue for a sec, and had that “Hm, not bad.” look. That thing of “Yellow Eyed bastards preying on innocent children to further their own plans to unleash pure evil on the world” makes us sound like Biff saying, “Something VERY familiar about all this.” Sympathy Sam is a good name. Sam is a good one with how he’s not sugarcoating, telling Jack how it is, all with that kindness, breaking the cycle, good stuff. And the good parallel of Jack’s father being Lucy yet he chose Castiel to be his dad. Compare this to how John is the boys’ father, yet Bobby is their dad, certainly Bobby saw it that way even going so far as to say they were his boys to the reaper and told the shadow of his father that he adopted them. Sam is walking that good tightrope with Dean. He understands how pissed Dean is, and is giving Dean the space with that, and letting him be angry. Only really putting a foot down when Dean takes it a bit too far. And yeah, Dean’s stance isn’t the most unreasonable thing in the world. And it is the thing of understanding does not mean you agree. As Sam explains, Dean’s hurt, and he becomes frustrated, and it gets crossed with anger. Which is not an excuse, it’s a reason. And Dean does move quick when he registers Jack stabbing himself. Sure, he puts more emphasis on the futility of Jack doing that, but the pause when he takes in the holes on Jack’s shirt sends a bit of a clear message. Good point on how Mary being stuck with Lucy could be good for her. After avoiding the boys as she did, valid reasons or not, she does need more of the wake-up call. Love the brotherly moments like Sam asking if Dean wanted Sam to drive, and Dean’s way of saying no. I can’t drive, so I couldn’t offer if I was Sam, and I love how Sam just lets that one slide. Likewise, love his ribbing Dean when Dean chides Jack for eating too fast, when as Sam notes, Dean is not one to talk on that one. A fact that Dean didn’t argue with. I did get defensive of Sam when he offered to take the couch rather than let Jack take it for the night. Sweet gesture though it is, I sounded like Crowley, saying, “Sam, your nickname is “Moose” for a reason! I’m about Crowley height, and you got practically an entire foot on me, and look at the size of that couch! How are you going to fit on that thing?!” Still sweet of Sam to make the offer though.

Asmodeus out here trying to pull of the white suit look when we all know the only one on this show who has ever been able to pull of the look is Sam. Also, freaking Yellow Eyed Demons, leave my precious Sammy and Jack alone! History can stop repeating itself anytime now- Yellow Eyed bastards preying on innocent children to further their own plans to unleash pure evil on the world. Sound familiar?
That being said... omg Sympathy Sam lol. I just adore when we get to see Sam's genuine empathy, compassion and kindness on full display. The way he is so gentle with Jack, encouraging and comforting, but also honest at the same time. Jack may be biologically Lucifer's, and Cas' by choice, but Sam is stepping up right now to be the father Jack needs, and he is killing it. Seeing the good in an innocent child, defending him even from his own brother, and fighting for Jack when Kelly and Cas can't. It is so wonderful to see Sam break the cycle of abuse that he went through, by refusing to pass his own pain onto someone else.
At the same time, I love that Sam is also handling Dean at the same time. He knows Dean is in pain right now, that Dean is angry, and scared and afraid, that he is grieving and falling apart, and Sam is holding everything together so that Dean has that chance to not be okay. He understands Dean so deeply, so well, and I love how Sam explained Dean's emotions to Jack, and then also gently but firmly called Dean out on his behavior. Sam is skillfully walking that line between letting Dean feel what he needs to, but calling Dean out when those feelings become destructive. Dean has lashed out at the wrong people before (how many times has he hit Sam in a fit of anger?) and Sam refusing to excuse that behavior now is such growth for him.
As for Dean... honestly, his feelings are valid. Losing that many people, that rapidly, is agonizing for someone who feels as deeply and truly as someone like Dean. But just because it is understandable, doesn't excuse the way Dean is acting and I feel like these episodes are doing a really good job of not watering down just how dark and destructive allowing your emotions to overwhelm you like this can make you.
And the Mary/Lucifer arc... as awful as it is, I think Mary needs to see what Lucifer is. She spent so much of season 12 avoiding her boys, and the consequences of her choices (valid reasons or not), that she needs to see what Dean, but especially Sam, has not only endured because of that deal, but also overcome. She was so focused on the bad that her deal has done to Sam, that I think being trapped with Lucifer will open her eyes to just how strong, and good, Sam is, and has become, and will let her see fully why Sam needed to go through what he did, to become the man he is
