last proper 3 parter was Planet of Giants back in 1964 though that was recorded as a 4 parter but the final 2 episodes got cut in half

You're right - we haven't had one since "Planet of Giants" and that was, as you might recall, written and actually filmed as a four-parter before being edited down to three parts for broadcast. And even this slot was orginally planned for a single six-part story - but was then split into two three-part stories.
