I went to Mike Nelson, with both "Well, if you can't trust the Devil...", and "You actually sold your soul to Stan."

About the only concrete thing I know about Mephisto is that he’s a Satanic archetype of Marvel, your statement about the marriages, and, you know, the whole WandaVision speculation shit. That is a vivid memory of high school when Borat came out and practically everyone loved it or went nuts about it, and I was just puzzled by what the appeal was. Seen a few jokes of that film connected to this. More, surprisingly enough, related to The Dictator as I was not under the impression that the film was particularly popular. Did have a moment or two, but it’s not winning any awards for best comedy. Sasha Baron Cohen was fun in Ricky Bobby. He’s DAMN good in Hugo, as he is in Sweeney Todd and Les Mis. Still not completely sold on his casting here, but he does all right. He’s more distracting than bad, put it that way. And given that I know he has the chops, I am optimistic of having a better time with him as the character in future projects. Good note on the One More Day business. Abrupt though it is, this ending was built up well. The music was a good touch. Same here with how all indications said that this was just a single miniseries. No idea how or when this will continue. Continues the odd trend of I have mixed receptions to the summer MCU shows. Secret Invasion being reasonably well liked before the ending derailed it. Ms. Marvel, though not entirely my cup of tea was good, they just rushed the second half. Then there was season one of Loki which was objectively good. The problem with that was that it came out during a very, VERY BAD time for me, which sapped a lot of enjoyment of the show. Still don’t even know how I registered and processed the season finale as energy was completely gone when watching it. The thumbnail image of Loki in the finale that Jess has in her reaction to said finale, that was me watching the finale, and not for anything to do with the finale. Made watching season two difficult as I was plagued with the bad memories. Jess helped a lot with that one. This one, Ironheart, mixed bag though it was, overall, I found it good and enjoyable enough. Not yet seen Thunderbolts*. I know everybody is hoping for the new Fantastic Four to be good. I still quite like the two Fantastic Four films from the latter half of the 2000’s. They weren’t perfect, sure, but they were great fun. This new one surely is going to be better than Fant4stic, if nothing else. I would hope, anyway. Not seen Superman: Legacy, (Am I saying that right? Superman: Legacy? I heard that was a fan name for it to differentiate from the previous Superman films.) and I feel like I’m going to be the asshole saying that it can’t escape the shadow of the older films. Not helping is they put the original one on tv recently, and it just reminds you how so good it is. Made me sad seeing Gene as Lex, Mom mentioned much the same expressing missing him. Makes me further concerned that I’m not going to be anywhere near enthused about Superman: Legacy as everyone else is. But, of course, if that comes to pass, that’s just me. Hopefully everyone else will greatly appreciate and enjoy the film and just be happy to have a good Superman film that’s not bogged down by the dirge and dreariness of the Snyder of it all.

First and foremost, there is the strength of this show that there was no fear, messiness-wise. The messiness being particularly pronounced, grief-wise. Like I quoted in the comments of the last reaction, “At a time of loss, there’s nothing easier than pity and nothing more difficult than the truth, as there are no easy answers for grief.” You speak true that Riri hasn’t graduated to the point of acceptance. She shifted back to denial with the death of Natalie9000. Good for everyone being supportive. You know it’s serious when wagon-kid offers sincere apologies. Before getting into the final confrontation, we get the information of how the Hood made the decision to waltz with Mephisto in the pale moonlight. Oh, sorry, that was supposed to be a MASSIVE SHOCK, wasn’t it? I didn’t anticipate him appearing in this show. But still, that “reveal”? That felt obvious once we saw him. Not sure if Marvel was wanting the reveal to be the big shock, but it was obvious that it was Mephisto even before completing his introductory scenes, as there aren’t many candidates for Satanic archetypes in the Marvel universe, so it’s not like there’s many options otherwise. See that you had a similar assessment, which was refreshing. Repeating what I said on youtube when you asked about were we happy, Mephisto-wise. Not really, no, but I’m sure everyone else who has spent the last four years foaming at the mouth for him are. Good that you have the better response to the casting than I did, and I am curious how it’s going to be going forward. The big scene with Mephisto and the Hood was good. Got distracted by the food, asking about Mephisto, “...Is he eating a slice of deep-dish, when they ordered a thin crust for the table?” Or maybe I just saw it wrong. I got so annoyed in the later scene by the Hood asking when Mephisto got an accent. Everyone has an accent. The question is such a stupid one. I get the question is meant to represent that he caught the change of accent, but it’s so poorly phrased. The Hood was spiraling, and when he started complaining about what Mephisto promised, and I imitated Walter Huston by quoting, “Oh, just a minute, I promised you money, and all that money could buy. I don’t recall any other obligations. But uh, well, let’s uh- Let’s look at the contract, huh?” We both had similar response to poor Ezekiel. That last scene bodes ominously. For a peace offering, I think Riri should find out where the police were taking him. Send over a bottle of bubbly with a bucket of ice and a card: Have it say, “Tough break, get drunk on me, use the bucket to ice down your marbles. Yours, Riri.” Then there’s the big final scenes. Can’t really improve on what you said. Quite the moment in your reaction when we see the answer to the Faustian offer made, and we see that somehow, Natalie returned. Riri is overwhelmed, Natalie is confused, and everybody’s fucking nervous. So concludes this show, or season, I guess. I also have not heard word about continuations, or even just when we see Riri again. You are welcome for the patience given to you with this show. No worries on the release schedule. Again, we both fucked up with the knowledge of this show, release schedule-wise. Like the past summer MCU shows, didn’t have the best of times with this. Got super annoyed by the release of it making it feel like it got burned through goddamn quick. But it was a good experience, I had a good time, and I’m glad to have shared the show with you, Jess, thank you.

Well Marvel, I hope you're ready for an onslaught of jokes about all the marriages in the MCU that are about to be erased, seeing as that's literally the only thing most people know about Mephisto. Now, I've never had any interest in Sasha Baron Cohen's most famous stuff, which has always just come off as the same kind of pathetic "Look how edgelord and un-PC I am! Please pay attention to me!" shit you see from John Cleese and Terry Gilliam these days. So my major image of him is from Hugo, with a tad of Sweeney Todd and Les Mis, and I guess there's worse things to be. And he totally kills this role, commanding your attention the second he appears and making you fully believe he's an ancient all-powerful being who can easily talk anyone into trading away their soul. I'm also having fun imagining how the MCU version of One More Day would go down. "I'll bring your Aunt May back, but everyone will forget you ever existed...oh dude, seriously?"
There's not that much else I can really think of to talk about here; it's just the logical ending this was all building to, and it's carried off decently. The one thing that really stands out is the music when Natalie comes back, which manages to perfectly feel both happy and scared at the situation all at once. I'm also kind of confused at ending the show on this note, since every single piece of marketing I've seen refers to it as a single miniseries and that doesn't seem to have changed in the time since the ending was released, so is this going to be picked up in someone else's movie down the line or what? I'm left reminded of how the last Venom movie teased a new Thanos figure for a franchise we all knew going in was over, and that isn't a good place to be. But looking back on it, the show did more good than bad, which is really all I was hoping for at this point with the current state of the MCU, though Thunderbolts showed there's still some gas left in the tank so I have some higher hopes for Fantastic Four. Of course, it's also now finally DC's turn in the sun, so that's where most of my attention is going now. Hope to see you there sometime too; there's a ton you'd be very into.
