KineFX 101 – pt. 29: Rigging Volumes

Lets face it: One of the really fun things with KineFX is just finding new, weird things to rig and animate. And … why wouldn’t you want to rig a volume?

This is our challenge for today and the solution is a really simple and straightforward one, using the somewhat new volume deformation workflow and some capturing tricks.

Hey! Chris chiming in here: This episode uses FBX Files, which sometimes can cause issues with KineFX. We've adressed these issues and all our known solutions in Episode 31 of this course. If something in your setup isn't behaving as shown in the video and the error persists if you load the scenefile, give Ep31 a watch!

Hey! There's just a single vdb linked in the blend to keep the scene file small. Just write out the sequence in the hip file as a filecache and relink the file sequence in Blender (import the vdb sequence, give it the same material as the still frame, delete the still frame) Adding Physics to this setup ... won't be trivial. Trying to use the deformed volume as a source in a Pyro sim would be my first starting point, but I don't have a fully formed idea yet, how to get the behaviour from it, that you're looking for.

nvm I watched the whole tutorial, quick question, is there a simple way we can make this VDB hit something and dissipate like smoke? Like hitting the ground or a wall? How can we add physics to it if its possible?

MM

Blender file doesnt seem to have the animation or VDB in it. Am I doing something wrong?

This tutorial was amazing! Thanks so much for this!!

great thank you!

Hey! Unfortunately Mixamo has currently no option to link directly to specific animations nor can we share Mixamo models directly in our scenefiles. So the only way to get the FBX right now is to log into your mixamo account, search for "walking" and pick the animation, i've shown in the video (around TC 3:30). The setup should work with pretty much any animation though, so picking the exakt one isn't hugely important here.

Entagma_Chris

Where can i find the fbx file that is needed for this rig?

Disney Animation

Awesome content, really love the choice in tutorials lately.
