PDG 101 - Pt.1: Course Overview & PDG Basics

It happened – we finally found a brave guy who agreed to take us through the ins & outs of using PDG in a small studio/freelance environment. Meet Chris Kopic! You might know him from his guest tutorial – turns out he’s not only into simulations and rendering but also into automatization and parallelization. Exactly what you’d need to work effectively with PDG.

So, please welcome Chris and enjoy exploring this immensely powerful toolset called PDG in Houdini!

This is extremely helpful, great! PDG always felt daunting, until I watched these.

Tutorial request: Animation wedging with flipbooks and pdg variable burn-ins. So for example a 50 frame pyro animation with different simulation and combustion values.

Joerg Fluegge

Just spoke with Mo. I guess you can look forward to thursday ;)

Hey! I haven't found a way to directly access a top attrib from vex, but this workaround worked for me: Create an input field for the right data type ("chi()" for the index) and simply add your pdg index in there, like you would with any other parameter.

Entagma_Chris

Thank you Entagma and Chris! Any idea when the next tutorial on PDG would come out? Kind regards

Joris Putteneers

How would you go about accessing the pdg index inside of a vex node? if you know :D

Hey Tom! Thanks for your input! External, non PDG managers is a topic, I'm still unsure about, if it should fit into this series. At least in my experience these are pretty uncommon in small studios and since there are multiple available, I'll probably have to favor one over the other. But let's see how high the demand actually is. And there will definitely be lots of otherwise tedious tasks, we'll tackle :)

Entagma_Chris

Would be great to cover some PDG/Shotgun tasks, and how we can use our SG database to automate hideously time consuming and tedious tasks from that.

Tom Rowell

Thanks Entagma Chris. I’ll check it out with them.

Hey Paul, my guess is that you'd need at least an engine license per client, since this is the lowest level license, that's still able to run simulations. I'd just ask the side fx support, though. They're usually very fast and very helpful in these cases.

Entagma_Chris

This course is well timed indeed! Does anybody know, with PDG can you run sims on all machines or just ones with engine licenses? I can't get it running at the moment because of conflicts with my existing pipeline. I wish I could get a genie here sometimes so i could click my fingers and it all worked but alas!

paul silcox

Just in time for me :) !!

Csaba Kanal

Why did you got rid of the sc on bgeo.sc btw? It's not even a pdg question haha, the pdg part was super clear. Thx

Particle Skull

Love it! The analogies are great
