Particles Part 01 - Paint Removal

Hi folks. This video marks the start of a new course on Entagmas Patreon. Particles! Particles are versatile and visually interesting and Houdini is capable of handling tons of them. At the same time they are the easiest of all the DOP categories and well suited to dive into the world of DOPs. Starting with this video Manuel will give you advice on how to control particles and forces and of course about the inner workings of the POP solver. We'll pull off some pretty neat effects.

This tutorial shows how to build a nice particle setup to peel the paint off an object. Instead of starting with a lot of theory we'll build a practical example first. The math will be for later lessons. Have fun!

When we set the emission type to "all points" inside POP Net, we can't control the amount of particle emitted per second or per frame. So is it fixed by houdini internally. if so what is it?

Thanks for the tutorial! When I add the pop sprite node my computer hangs. I've tried it a few times and don't know what's going on.

I think there might be something lost in our accent - guess what Manu meant was 3D Coat: https://3dcoat.com/ Cheers, Mo

Love the tutorials, Manuel! Just curious , at the start of the video you mention making the .obj in "3D Code". What is this? Googled around and could not find any obvious link to that reference. Thanks, Will

Hello! I just joined the patreon and wanted to first say thanks for the awesome content! I'm wondering how I would go about initializing the noise growth from a chosen point on the surface. I know there are functions which look for the next nearest points on a surface, but I'd like to preserve a random noise pattern instead of a simple radial growth. Any thoughts?

Hi mmo, whatever interests you I suppose... Personally I'd start with either volumes or VEX but really anything that intrigues you! Cheers, Mo

Entagma

Hello I am a new supporter! I have a very basic knowledge about Houdini. Where do I start? I wonder!

mmo

How can I help you understand? Feel free to ask here. Cheers mnu

Entagma

oh man i feel a bit overwhelmed this was a great tut but i dont fully understand half the nodes you used and how they did it i feel like i just a great result because you did hahah but will keep watching the other ones maybe i'll get the logic

Lucky Dee

Thank you so much, that was so clear and beautiful.

Emmett Feldman

That was the most patient and straight forward introduction to particles I’ve ever experienced. Thanks!

Hi Peter, Mo here - not 100% sure about Manu's setup but usually in Redshift you'll give each particle a color attribute and read that in the Redshift shader using a Point Attribute Lookup. Cheers, Mo

Entagma

Find it great! A question. My particles are black and black. Your seems to be blue and white. Could you please point me in right direction to set colors?

GrayNode

Fixed it. Sorry for the inconvenience!

OMG, Keep em coming. Love from Mexico!

not directly. But we could build such a control node. That is probably a good topic for a later episode.

Entagma

question, with this set up ~ is there any way we can control velocity, birth rate, and everything under one node like particular in AE? thank you

Sorry, but this will be Redshift again. A Mantra setup would look quite similar though.

Entagma

Hopefully rendered in Mantra :)

Hi Sam and Uzi. A shading video will come next Thursday! Cheers mnu

Entagma

Thanks you for this one, very clear and informative! I also would love to see a UV tutorial made by you guys.

Uzi Mor

would love to see how you do your uv texturing and shaders. great tutorial as usual, thank you.
