Vellum 101 - Connecting Wires

Admittedly I craved for a bit more VEX coding and I found rebuilding Manu's old "Connecting the Yarns" setup in Vellum to be exactly the right dose of coding I needed :)

In this tutorial we'll use VEX to dynamically create additional constraints which pull together individual wires while simulating.

Hm, that's weird- I just checked both project files and they work fine here on Indie 18.0.416 - maybe updating your Houdini install is gonna solve it?

My restlength doesn't seem to be shrinking. Downloaded the project to A/B it but a lot of errors come up upon open, which in itself isn't unusual but it results in your Vellum Solvers being empty it seems. Im on Houdini 18.0.3 Indie (more of an FYI about the project issue than a request for help about the restlength)

Hi Valentina, I'm a bit confused - vellum works on polygons (except in grains mode), so you should be able to export your sim via alembic without conversion. Cheers, Mo

Hello guys, do you know of a way to convert this vellum object to polygons, so i can export it with alembics?

Hey Patrick, I usually tend to use Wrangles over VOPs but that should be absolutely doable :) Cheers, Mo

Hey Mo,is it possible to drive the restscale with a noise in the popvop?

ewwwww......aawweessome?

Hey Isaac, absolutely! You could instead of VEX build the whole setup using VOPs. However I personally am no big fan of VOPs as I find them more difficult to read tha VEX. Cheers, Mo

Hey Isaac, indeed those are the constraints rendered out. The render setup is included in the .zip file. It's "connecting_wires_003.hip". Cheers, Mo

Hey guys, wondering for the render on this one, did you render out the actual constraints as geo? The OUT_Geo looks very different from your render, which looks more like the constraints, but I'm having trouble recreating the render.. Can you please share the render set up?

Amazing effect, do you foresee a way to achieve something similar without so much VEX, even if you give up some control or is slower to sim?
