Vellum 101 - Inflating Ballons Into A Shape

Another really popular question regarding Vellum: How do you inflate geometry so it fits inside an arbitrary geometry? Admitted - this can look neat and has a wealth of applications in motion design, so let's just do it!

In this tutorial we'll build a Vellum balloon setup that gets inflated to fill the shape of a letter.

Hi Hussain, why not just instance a sphere onto those grains then use the same workflow as in the video? You'd just have to make sure the sphere has a radius of 1.0, so the grains' pscale value scales it to the grains' size. (Maybe make the sphere a tiny bit smaller, so there are no intersections at the beginning.) Cheers, Mo

Hi Mo, If my starting point is vellum grains, how would I turn those grains into this balloon effect, wondering if the transition node would be to turn those points into primitives? Thanks!

Hussain Almossawi

hey Luka, did you ever figure this out? I see what you're saying at the start even In the test file, it's sort of pauses and jerks at the start..

Kieran

Hi Paul, I just checked the provided scene file on H17.5.173 and it works as expected. Cheers, Mo

Hi! Could you test this on Houdini 17.5? I'm trying to follow but I'm not getting results. I'm guessing a few options for the solver changed? Would love to just get some insight on what we'd need to change. Specifically, I'm watching it solve and it is triggering the detangle process, and it goes crazy. Thanks!

Hey, Entagma, how can I implement partial shrink/expand? I believe shrinking-expanding restlength propagading through geometry is a way do somethink like worm/jellyfish movement

Az Ainamart

Hey Mo! Is there a reason that the balloon expansion is kind of jerky? Is there a way to smooth out the motion as they expand?

Luka

Hi Jia, haven't verified it yet but you should be able to just merge your geo that's set up for shrinking and the geo set up for expansion. Just merge the geo streams and the constraint streams. Maybe it's a good idea to add a group to discern both geos inside your vellum solver. Just restrict your constraintproperty-nodes to the respective groups and that should do it. :) Cheers, Mo

Hi, just joined Patreon. Super excited to learn from you guys! I understand that we need to add a vellumconstrainproperty node inside the solver node. The problem is that here we are using a static object as a collision object, but let's say if we are going to turn the letter to vellum (shrinking balloon) and use it as a collider. Now do we need to use two separate solvers? how to make two solvers interact without making them recursive (feeding each other's end result to collision input)?

Jia

Hello, I was wondering if there is an easy way to explode the ballons as soon as the rest length goes over a threshold.Thanx!

Thanks for the great tutorial! I made this: <a href="https://i.imgur.com/JTqnjQB.gifv" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://i.imgur.com/JTqnjQB.gifv</a> (also my first proper Mantra render woohoo)

Konsta Ryösä

I had 2 questions if thats cool: 1- How can I randomize the size of the ballons? 2- Is there a way to zone them based off a color map, so in certain areas the balloons are bigger and in others its smaller? Thanks.

Hussain Almossawi

Thanks a lot for this, been looking a lot for this, appreciate you guys doing it!!

Hi Wirginia, no problem, I just sent you a PM :) Cheers, Mo

Oh, me too... I have unrelated question, which I really apologize about. I'm putting together an example about how I learn from tutorials for my GDC talk in March. And I would love to use one of your tutorials as an example. To put this in context - the idea is that I do follow a tutorial, but then I also play with it to learn and make something unique.I wouldn't tell, or show how the final result of this tutorial was achieved, but I would like to render few hundred frames long animation (flipbook). Of course I will give you the credit and point everyone to your Patreon for more cool tutorials. Please let me know if that would be ok?

Hi Bruno, what do you mean by "stick"? Never really been using hair that much but in my quick tests the RS noise behaves as I'd expect. (Which doesn't need to mean that much as I might be too ignorant to see the issue...) Cheers, Mo

Entagma

Awesome stuff guys! Thanks for this. Ok I have a super unrelated question and I just don't know where to turn anymore. Apologies for the shameless unrelatedness. I am shading a hairgen node with redshift and whenever I use an RS Noise node to drive color, I can't get the Noise to "stick" (with a viable vertex attribute and source changed to Vertex Attribute). I have also tried every way of exporting the vertex attrib, enabling and disabling automatic attribute export (and manually inputting the attrib name) on my geo... but to no avail. I would greatly appreciate if you could point me in the right direction. Cheers
