VEX101 - Transformation Matrix Intuition

Under the hood of most 3D apps, transformation matrices are an integral part of how objects are moved (and scaled and rotated and sheared) in three dimensional space.

In Houdini sometimes you'll be confronted with a transformation matrix too - this is a basic primer on what a transformation matrix does and how we can manipulate it in VEX.

The intrinsic transformation matrix from the tube primitives output by the wireframe SOP can be used too: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1nfEX7ITQYG9kO0uZnav3EpIUhaOwAb5j

This is easily the clearest matrix explanation I have ever had the pleasure of digging through! Great work Mo!!!

Mr Racecar

Thanks ! Will try this one now.

Thanks for the lesson! Very helpful!

Actually this could work (almost) without any VEX at all: https://www.dropbox.com/s/htm7m66km4u983m/copy_to_edge_centers_01.hip?dl=1 Althoug if you'd just want tubes along edges - use the wireframe-SOP. That might be the quickest way :) Cheers, Mo

Weird how your geometry got triangulated near the end.... anyway, I look forward more topics on transformations like this, particularly dealing with quaternions, going from matrix to quaternion, quaternion to matrix and so on. Cheers.

Great result with this techniques! I have a question, do you guys how to copy a tube or any objects to edges of another object, just like cloner system in C4D, in that you can chose to clone one object onto edge and scale it fit to the edge length ? I already tried with some nodes and VEX but still so far from final result.

Thanks for this great intro to Matrix! It is really clear and it looks less complicated than I thought when it's well explain like that. Can't wait to see further explorations or techniques with Matrix in Vex.

Indeed 3Blue1Brown is a fantastic channel! Everyone who'd like a more in-depth look into the math involved check it out: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYO_jab_esuFRV4b17AJtAw

Yo! I'm guilty of not yet having watched this fillum, which I'm SURE will be a thing of beauty; though I've been reminded of another wonderful series of videos titled "Essence of linear algebra", on Youtube channel 3Blue1Brown. So watch the above, then the Youtube ones. In fact, watch all the things, twice. Love you guys. xx
