2025-05-09 22:44:00 +0000 UTCA lesser known/underrated film also based on a Terry McMillan book (How Stella Got Her Groove Back and Waiting to Exhale) is Disappearing Acts- it is more geared towards the 30-something-yr-old audience; those who feel another misdirect from life, another trying-to-figure-out-how-to-pivot yet again; still holding on to hope for small victories, starring Wesley Snipes and Sanaa Lathan as our leads. You can feel the exasperated breath of disappointment held by both characters as they come to the realization that their life turning out how they thought is never going to happen, and an exhale of relatability as they finally let some fantasies go, they both 'go back to the drawing board' for a fresh start. Also, I think Jaby's thirst for Sanaa may finally be quenched with the steamy love scene(s); hell, Boose just may have to leave the room (joking, joking)! It is clear they are trying to navigate and prep for their next chapter in life all while not knowing exactly what that really entails- Snipes (Franklin) is past his prime and now being older, he is a bit more mature and more focused than ever to secure betterment for his future (but still has to answer to responsibilities and stumbling blocks his 20-yr-old-hot-headed-self created) and Lathan (Zora) is still holding on to hope of snatching a bit of stardom in the entertainment industry as she is no spring chicken either. Both feel sidelined by their own lives but are no longer on anybody's taxes- please check them out as they try to make due with career, love life, and personal development. A personal favorite of mine for us "feeling in limbo" folks attempting to still find 'good soil' and prayerfully yield worthiness from it!
