2025-04-05 20:54:55 +0000 UTCThe reason Tommy Lee Jones isn't interested in investigating the crime is that marshals don't do that (at least at the state level). What they are involved in (and the reason they are called in in this movie) is prisoner transfers and escapes. Most states have some kind of statute that allows marshals to assist in fugitive recovery.
