This movie is extremely hard to watch but I always admired the poetry and the acting in this movie. I believe that Tyler shot this film in a way that is overwhelming on purpose. I feel like in itself I could be interpreted as the way life is πŸ€·πŸΎβ€β™€οΈ. Sometimes things happen and you don't get a chance to unpack it all, your just in motion. You experience trauma but life doesn't stop, and I think that's why I love the scene where the mother is told to breathe because she forgot to give herself a chance to breathe and feel those emotions so that you can finally move forward without having those feelings packed and dragging her down. I've personally experienced a couple of things from this film or know people that have experience these things and the jump from sad to laughing to terror is very much like life, everything happens within each other almost blending. It's funny Tyler has a stage play called laugh to keep from crying.

I’ve been waiting for you guys to get here. I really liked this movie- I’ve seen the Broadway play and was curious to see how the film would be handled and TP stayed true to the material. This was a collection real life stories from black women in the mid 70s turned into poems. It was then formed into a play and went on to be the 2nd black play to play on broadway. The way TP shot this (being a theater director) he shot it lime a play. Thats what there are scenes where actors are not facing each speaking. He made the camera a theater audience in many shots and blended back into cinema the way the poems flow in and out the script. Its like a musical but with poems. Coming out of the civil rights movement, ramifications of Vietnam and many other socioeconomic reasons makes even the play difficult - but as difficult as it is- it was/is reality for black women. In the play no one has a name - all the women are separated by colors and their stories. The full title of the play, helps to see the overall message: β€œFor Colored Girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf” It ended on no matter what we go through individually - no matter how hard that is, we have each other and that is enough. So glad you guys did this one! You guys should check out New Jack City & Waiting to Exhale πŸ‘πŸΏ
