It's a hardboiled neo-noir detective movie, and a Karate Kid mentor story, and also a Jackie Chan style stunt comedy starring, again, Burt Reynolds.

Just checked; my copy of Heat (on disk!, 1:40:58), ends with the bad guy shooting himself offscreen, then Burt stands and walks to inspect the body and we cut to a bright sunny day in Venice with Burt alone in the back of gondola. Definitely shot on location. Peter MacNicol nowhere to be seen after his own death scene about 15 minutes earlier.
