Nerding Day: The Legend of Zelda TV Commercial

Welcome, everyone, to the PoxCo Experimental Theatre’s first no-act production, The Legend of Zelda [Ad]. Told entirely through a single TV commercial, this avant-garde play dares to defy what little expectations 1987 had of video games already. You can watch it here, but should you? Only if, like me, you want to spend the next three decades haunted by its Dadaist take on one of the greatest video games ever made. Protect your thoughts by reading the stageplay at an ironic distance.

Brendan’s fine, kid, thanks for asking. Here, have a free joke to take home to your ma.

I have never felt more like Rusty Venture.

Bill D

My work here is done.

Matt Edwards

Thanks to you, I now know “sega” is “ages” backwards. I have no idea where to go from here. But existential confusion seems like an appropriate feeling to attach to this article, so…good job?

toasty god

Apparently, he’s on the cartridge too (can’t post pics but it’s on Amazon if anyone dares question my word). That hillbilly and his banjo were vital to the Phalanx game world.

The only good Nintendo ads were the Rik Mayall ones. Other than those, I'll take a Cybo Razor Cut. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnDvq9C8E_c

Matt Edwards

I just tried to sing the words on the screen to the melody.

Matt Pedone

Yeah, VERY strong Peter MacNicol presence. Who, by the way, I'm convinced played Rorschach in Terry Gilliam's alternate-universe Watchmen adaptation.

Brendan McGinley

Brendan McGinley

Were the FF lyrics sung to the prologue music or the overworld music?

Zach Dewoody

Can’t believe I wasted so much of my gym class learning line dances and not this dance.

Nick Gilbert

That was amazing! I want a copy of that song.

Matt Pedone

To each their own on his attractiveness. He's got a Peter MacNicol vibe going on that's not for me. Now, had I seen the Japanese commercial Nick Gilbert posted below when I was 9...

Matt Pedone

This kicks ass

DustysRadTitle

Mr. McGinley, are you okay. Do you require a lozenge. I can provide multiple fine ones.

Robert K.

I need to watch that commercial again when I am relatively free of illness, right now it just seems normal, I'm just nodding my head and thinking "Yeah I know how all this relates to Legend of Zelda for the Nintendo Entertainment System."

Flippant Sausage

I see EVERYONE's jumping on the Billy Karate bandwagon now

Daphne Lawless

I was warned against clicking. I cannot say I wasn't warned.

Katherine

Was I the only person who looked up if there really was a Tropical Storm Irwin in 1987? It turns out there was. Imagine having your life destroyed by a Tropical Storm Irwin. I mean, Hurricane Katrina always makes sense to me, because I had my heart broken by a Katrina. But Irwin? Wow.

Matthew Harris

Same, only I thought Link was really cute. I don't know if that's more or less lame, just that for a few months he had my 12 year old heart.

Bonnybedlam

For contrast, the Japanese commercial for Zelda is a low budget but surprisingly earnest offering: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=umhKcl1Z52I I recommend checking it out if you haven’t seen it. It’s a trip.

Nick Gilbert

Brendan, do you need a hug? Scream random video game words in a closet while fighting DTs if you need a hug.

FancyShark

Man, I still remember quoting this commercial with friends at recess when I was 9. We thought it was strange, but unironically awesome. What's lamer than a dweeb? Me.

Matt Pedone

I remember this commercial vividly and how fucked it was. My brother and I talked about it a lot... he will still randomly shout, "LEEVERS!" to this day. But after we moved, later that year, none of my new friends had any idea what we were talking about. If my brother hadn't also remembered it, I think I would have chalked it up to a fever dream.

Jeff Orasky

I legit thought you were joking about that guy going on to play The Cryptkeeper. But you weren't! This is now a Learning Day!

FancyShark

If I have touched the soul of Sissyneck, I should retire at my peak.

Brendan McGinley

Brendan stop trying to trick me into going into your soul labyrinth. I don't care how many videogames are in there.

Vooster

There was a Super Nintendo game called Phalanx and on the box cover there was a picture of an old guy with a banjo. I remember as a kid I racked my brain trying to understand what that had to do with a game about a spaceship shooting aliens. I eventually made up a story in my head that the old guy was sitting on his porch telling his grandkids the story about how he was in an intergalactic war. What I'm saying is that game's box cover was just as nonsensical as this commercial.

Max Rockatansky

I'd watch this.

Ulmeck

This is deliciously hilarious food for my soul.

LyraV

well i havent seen much of in the live theater (they do a melodrama evry year over in Bancroft but thats about it) but i might have to start because i have been brought low and weepin by that mornful sooey after such a motional build-up i kinda feel like i'm gonna throw up but also sexy?
