2021-08-18 18:28:52 +0000 UTCI think last episode when Elena told Damon "Well maybe that's the problem", in my impression at any rate, is the moment Damon kinda said "screw it". He pretty much gave up on actually trying to get Elena. He saw that whatever he did he could not get her to care about him for who he is. That's why in this episode he voluntarily turned Abby, because now he wants the two people that he cares about, Stefan and Elena, to actually get together. Also the only reason he even offered a coin toss, was probably because he was hoping Stefan would not feel guilty if Damon lost the coin toss. But that went against him because he actually won it and still ended up turning Abby, which was what he wanted anyway.
