Beast Complex Script Preview 8/6/24
Added 2024-08-06 20:07:38 +0000 UTCI figure I'm overdue for a check-in.
So, I had a nearly "finished" script for the Beast Complex video back before I got derailed for the Sigma Paws one. But I always planned on re-reading all of the material and then revising the script from scratch. I'm currently, eh, half way done with that process? Which has been less a series of spot-check edits and more me actually rewriting every section so far.
My outlook has changed a bit re: how much I want to give people a peek at every story vs focusing on the ones that support a queer reading, so I've been cutting half of the sections entirely and then expanding the ones that I'm keeping with additional observations and so on.
This means a shorter video, which arguably means that it'll do worse. I kinda hate that the algorithm puts that in my brain: the idea that longer is always better even though obviously being razor-focused and concise is actually what makes a better video. But my two biggest videos ever are the three hour ones. Annoying lol.
Anyway, some of the cuts hurt, because some ideas are fun to talk about even if they're off topic. I might just make a second video later called "The Unhinged Worldbuilding of Beastars" or something where I get to ramble on, freed of the queer analytical framework. It's not the first time I've had the idea. If I ever get around to my Walking Dead video idea I just know that I'll be overcome with my need to rant about all of the bad adaptational decisions the show made in comparison to the comic, which is if off-topic from my read that the series is kinda fascinatingly leftist despite being so popular with conservatives. So I've mentioned the idea of making two Walking Dead videos for those two topics for years. We'll see if I ever get to that lol, long ass comic and show(s). I at least want to do Myst first.
Still trying to pursue and ADHD diagnosis, and still getting my time wasted. I'd just love to have answers (and/or drugs) so that I can chip away at my struggles to write in day to day life. It'll be interesting to see if my output rises on the other side of this. I hate how much time I lose, precisely because of how rarely it's because of "writer's block" and how often it's me simply not managing well.
Anyway, here's the first half of the Beast Complex chapters, often with fragmented notes and missing transitions. I often keep the door open to potentially rearranging the sections to flow differently. They're currently just in release order. I leave for a trip in just over a week, so I'm really hoping to get the video out on Patreon before I leave, and then release it publicly after I get back. If there's a lack of solo early access let's play stuff in the next couple of weeks, that's why.

The upside of me taking a while is that this year's chapter of Beast Complex comes out tomorrow, and it's a Haru and Legoshi chapter. Fingers crossed it gives me something to write about lol

I'm trying to have videos that "just start" because giving people something immediately is how you retain attention. The Beastars videos opens with a mini-analysis of Luca, which is a common trick that video essays especially did back then: talking about something tangentially related that strengthens the overall point. Plush opened with horror imagery, Sigma Paws opened on this insufferable tiktok furry before pulling back the curtain to explain what the video is actually about. I feel like the worst way that I can open a video is by explaining from the ground up at second one what the video is going to be about any why. It drags, so it should come after some kind of hook or other narrative element. Having access to analytics is pretty dire because you see just how many people click off in the first five seconds before you even had a chance to form a thought at them. It's why so many lower effort videos just straight up put a "highlight" moment of the video at the beginning before then continuing like normal.
