I grew up on episodic television and only really got into serialised stories when I started watching anime like Bleach and Naruto in the early 2000s. A lot of shows I watched in the 90s had serialised elements but individual episodes could usually be watched and enjoyed in isolation. As a teenager I had a collection of DVDs and VHS tapes of my favourite shows with a handful of episodes on them. Shows like Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space 9 and classic Doctor Who. Every now and then when I was in the mood I would grab a DVD or VHS and watch a couple of episodes that I felt like seeing again. I don’t have that experience with heavily serialised television. I never feel like going back and watching an individual episode. I either feel the need to rewatch entire seasons or even the entire series from the start or to just rewatch a couple of hype scenes from a show on YouTube. Honestly I think there is a balance that can be found between episodic and serialised storytelling but most shows can’t seem to manage it. For me Deep Space 9 was the show that came closest to finding that balance. I can watch about 90% of it’s episodes and enjoy them in isolation but if I watch the entire series from beginning to end I can get the benefit of seeing the plot and the characters develop over time. Of getting the build up to things like the Dominion war or watching Jake Sisko and Nog grow up into young men.
