Patron Q&A/Update Podcast, Episode 17: "The Secret Arc"

In the last one of these, I said it had been too long since the last one. Well, this time, it's been even longer. I get into why I kept delaying it in the episode, as well as explaining what I've been doing, including a bunch of secret plans that I don't expect to be talking about anywhere else for at least the foreseeable future. I also get into some of the real behind the scenes story of some seemingly trivial drama that I would not discuss publicly in most other places. Anyway, I'm sure I forgot to discuss plenty of stuff from the last 8 months, if there's anything I missed that you would have liked to hear me talk about, or you just wanna ask me anything whatsoever, please comment down below. This time I REALLY, SERIOUSLY promise not to keep you waiting so long for the next one.

I agree that if it's not practical to assemble a crowd for a lecture, you've just gotta work with what you've got. A big lecture crowd might create the highest quality video, but if it takes a year of logistics for you to get everyone together in one room, you'd probably be better off grabbing a board and filming it yourself. You'll create more videos that way and probably end up with more total views. And it'll definitely be a less frustrating process.

Do you still hate art?

This is your reminder to stand up, stretch, stay hydrated, and go to bed if it's too late. If you're still up, my question is: Last patron Q&A (or, I guess, this one?) you said your secret project was another PCP lecture. But I seem to remember you saying on the PCP that you were looking to rebrand yourself. Was the rebranding just a shift to creating more lectures, or is it something still undisclosed?

Lecture woes? I'm rather familiar with that. As you said, I'm also attempting to "continue the tradition" in that vein but with ProAnon (as others also have with the lecture format). Interesting to hear your thoughts on me continuing Yu-Gi-Oh! (YGO) or not. Although I see your point to have a comprehensive "how we got from here to dueling on bikes", my idea is it is A LOT of lore to go through (S0+DM even more so) so it'd be easier to have one per series. I kind of already set the precedent as well starting with the second series in the franchise for reasons I explain in the lecture itself (hehe https://youtu.be/XUGhUKwZPRM). Your motivated paladin sounds cool and I vibed with the comparisons you made. Obviously, I don't relate to pony-based stuff since I jumped in after that arc, but I can get behind the sentiments and see it being cool relating to paladins+ideals. 8 months ago I stated Barbarian/Fighter for Zomi, but I've written off fighter for now I think (this being the same mad lad you drew the sword for). Q: Do you prefer your character(s) to influence the story and stay consistent, or have the story influence the character more and have them adapt accordingly? The way you described your paladin makes me think you prefer the former but maybe I'm incorrect on that assumption. Critical Role is the really popular live-streamed DnD campaign run by Matt Mercer. It is one of the main things I've been binging since making that last Patreon comment. I understand its popularity and is pretty damn good. I personally view their second campaign as their best. Their campaigns are also available in podcast form as well if you are inclined.

You will find out! Maybe not in lecture format

I demand to know which game lore you were gonna talk about

(just reread this and holy shit this is so fucking long, I'm sorry. Feel free to skim it if you feel so inclined.) Personally I think that the lecture content has 2 main appeals: interesting long-form content where you learn obscure or complex facts, and getting to see and hear the reactions and banter in response to said facts being brought up. It seems to me that your alternative idea to the lectures would cash in on the former but not the latter. Unless I'm mistunderstanding and an audience is involved in the new idea too. All in all I would say it would still be worth it to make those kinds of videos, especially with the work you've already done. I mean, I would watch it. That being said, I would still advocate for seeing if you can do lecture content on a much more irregular basis. Reasons being A like you say they do drive the most money and engagement to your channel, and B it has the unique element of an audience and the reactions that come with that, which I do think really elevates the whole thing. People involved don't even need to be PCP members as long as you vibe with them and the interactions would be good. You've said you miss collaborating with other people on a project, so perhaps you could even put a semi-reliable collective of people together for it who do not have to travel long ways or are super busy or whatever. As for a question for the next Q&A whenever it may be: you've mentioned before that you don't find it super satisfying to have made comics or other creative works after they're done. What do you think is the most satisfying thing that you've done, mainly creatively or in other ways if it comes to mind? Why do you think it w as particularly satisfying and do you see ways of duplicating whatever that is in the future? Anyways Ben I hope you stay creative and I hope trying to make things and work on things gives you less grief and more satisfaction in the near future. From a relative outsider perspective it seems like you'd be the most well-served by having projects to work on which make you feel good about yourself. You've made some great stuff that you can be proud of and I hope you see that more and continue to make more <3

Big depression hours in here. Listened to the whole thing and I do have some thoughts on it. God damit I hit enter not new line. Welp if you see this and this is still the last line I'm not done yet comeback later. Can definitely relate to the projects falling through. It sucks. Although one thing about the creative process i did want to say is that sometimes you find what you want to do something along the way. You don't always have to know what you have to say ahead of time. Kind of how shows grow so much overtime. Writers don't always know what they want to do with characters after a pilot or the first season. Sometimes they don't know what they want to say with two characters interacting until they do it. Sometimes small things become big things over time. In futurama Hermes hates zoidberge. It all stems from one off hand line where Hermes was mean once. They don't know why they did that, they don't even remember really but it just stuck. They found it. So maybe trying to make some stuff, even if you aren't sure where you want it to go right away could be helpful. As an aspiring creative who is really bad at doing stuff, I can relate to the paralyzing questioning that keeps someone from doing a thing and I don't have much room to give advice, but you did solicit if anyone had thoughts about your thought process so i figured I'd just give my 2 cents. Maybe I can follow my own advice some to. Hope this is legible I'm famously bad at phone typing.
