Lens: Awesome and Has Bugs

As you may have seen by the overabundance of email notifications (apparently lens still has some bugs, which I have reported), Patreon has added a new feature kind of like snapchat where I can upload video and image clips that disappear after 24 hours. And it's even easier to use than snapchat, at least from my side of things!

It's got some bugs (besides the ants in my most recent clips) but I hope you'll bear with me as we figure it out. You can remove email notifications in settings on the patreon webpage, if you're getting that bug.

At the moment everything I'm posting on lens is patron only, though after we get the hang of things and some of the bugs ironed out I intend to experiment with doing some percentage of public ones, for the stuff that isn't too behind-the-scenes.

From the publishing side of things, I love this new feature. I've been wanting to find better ways to show you what I'm doing or working on day-to-day, but in a way that doesn't take too much working time out of my day, and that I don't have to worry too much about polishing to make fit for public viewing for years to come.

So, having easy-to-make low-pressure patron-only impermanent media works really well for me.

(Not that I trust anything that goes on the web is truly impermanent, or permanent for that matter, but at least the story of the art is that it is impermanent, and that changes the frame of the medium to something I can work with easily and quickly. Also it matters who legally can access and store store something and what that means for me, regardless of whatever else goes on with bits of data!)

I'm hoping this works well for you too, and I'd love to hear your feedback and if you have any bugs to report. As time goes on we'll see how useful it really is and how much is novelty.

Discussion questions:

-Are you getting a million billion notification emails, or is that just some folks? Does the amount of notification you're getting match the amount you want?

-Have you been watching at all? or is it not your thing? or other?

-If watching, what have been your favourite clips?

-Are any other creators you're following using it in an interesting way that you can reference me to?

-I don't think there's a direct way to comment on lens clips. Some folks have been using the community page, which seems to work. Others have just sent me messages on here or other platforms. Should there be a more consolidated way? Or impermanent comments for impermanent media? Hmm!

P.S. see I like Lens because every time I write an update post it takes me hours, even this one! I'm totally over-thinking it! But lens is rather one-sided whereas here I hope to learn from y'all :D

I hate to be a wet rag, but I got about a million email messages about something that didn't work when i clicked on it. I'm pretty good at ignoring email, but i was contemplating unsubscribing. I've finally gotten around to loading the patreon app. Maybe that will allow me to play the things? That might make the notifications less annoying. I'd also request that the shorts last a week, rather than a day. There are lots of days when I won't have time to watch, and that leads to more emails about something I'll never see. :(

Sorry I cant support you, i'm broke ;-;

Yeah! A few other folks mentioned the one-week thing, and personally I think that's a great idea!

As it took me five months to notice in my YouTube subscriptions that you were making your Patreon more active, I am excited by temporary videos but wonder if there is a setting to make them last a week instead of a day. My ability to click on things in a specific 24 hour period is not the best but within a week is more doable and less anxiety-provoking.
