2025-03-26 18:21:12 +0000 UTCmy favourite album is darkness on the edge of town - it's phenomenal, i can't even give words to describe it. if you don't want to listen to the whole album though, i'd recommend badlands, candy's room, the promised land or racing in the street. i would also consider checking out the movie blinded by the light. perfectly captures the energy of listening to the boss' music. (also, on the off chance you're especially interested in german/soviet history - read about his 1988 concert in east berlin. he opened with badlands, had an audience of 300,000 and gave an appeal for freedom that contributed so significantly to the need for liberation in east berlin at the time that modern historians have called the concert one of the factors for the fall of the berlin wall in 1989.) i know this is a lengthy reply, but it makes me really happy to see new bruce fans. hope you enjoy the recs!!

2025-03-25 18:45:01 +0000 UTCAnother comment lol, but “why” always will be more important to “what”, in my opinion. There is no what without a why, because then there’s no drive to create the what. WHY do we need something? For a task. The what comes later, as a question to identify something in order to figure out its meaning. Think of language & tools we’ve used as children. We need to know why we have something before we know what it is. If anyone’s ever been to a hospital or like in complete panic attack mode, you will always know why before what. I know why I need something, & in that moment, I don’t care WHAT it is; be it a hand to hold, painkillers, a doctor, maybe a shower. It’s what leaves you vulnerable, to be in a stage with little ability to do anything yourself or to ask questions & use that knowledge on your own. Another example- when I learnt English, I learnt the language before I knew what language is. I subconsciously knew why I needed it (for communication & thus survival), even though I discover new reasons of why I use English through new experiences. Also, if scaled by importance, why is still more important in my opinion, because without why, we’d never learn. We always need to ask why, because it’s how we learn. It’s how we are individuals who have thoughts independent of others that may use us. Also, knowing what something is can’t satiate the question of existence. If you think of existing as nothing but dark emptiness, then the pondering of “why” is existence enough in itself. You can fill a void with thoughts of why, though to be fair, I suppose this goes for all the questions there are to ask. But, a thought, or idea, can exist as a why or if, always before anything will become a what. Also, I think if you ask why enough, you get to the root of nature & existence itself. Why is the big question that people try to answer with religion- which is such an important part to many people’s lives- too, for instance. Think of the “why?” game kids play; kids do this & it appears (& may be intended as) obnoxious, but there’s also genuine curiosity in the unknown when you’re a kid. You could argue that we do, in fact, ask or learn the what before the why. But it doesn’t change the fact that one way or another, the necessity of a why will always come first. Sure, you may realize the why after the what, but its relevance surpasses what. In other words, we may 1st learn what and then why long after, but why, whether we ourselves knew it in the moment or not, was still the catalyst of what.

Of “Streets of Philadelphia” resonated with me. It was like hearing the thoughts & experiences of myself & so many others being described so beautifully. Thanks for inspiring me to give him a listen. I love it. Mr. Simons, if you like Bruce Springsteen, maybe try Johnny Cash. Different style, & roughly a decade before Mr. Springsteen started gaining popularity, but really powerful messages about self-discovery & commentary on how broken society is. The guy was ahead of his time. If anyone else has any suggestions on what to listen to, or has a favorite song from Bruce Springsteen, feel free to share!

(which is impressive for fake cheese)
