Shugenja Redux

The most up to date version of this class can be found here.

Water, Earth, Fire, Air…

The Shugenja are elemental masters, unlike anything you've seen for at least an edition and a half. Rather than casting spells normally, shugenja are scroll-casters, preparing and casting their magic through ink and parchment alone. This radical departure from conventional spellcasting requires thoughtful planning, but comes with a host of benefits: sharing scrolls with your allies, gaining the use of blank scrolls, which need not be prepared, and gaining a library of powerful elemental spells.

This class comes included with a huge suite of elemental magic to make your shugenja as unique as he is powerful.

We love this class, but the first time around we realized in playtesting that it could be a lot more fun to play, and I'm happy to say that I think we succeeded.

The quantity of changes here is smaller the effect they've had on the class. We reworked Blank Scrolls to be more interesting and we implemented a cap on the total number of spells you have have recorded in your Master Scroll to reduce the total power of being able to choose any spell you know for your Blank. Plus, we've replaced Elemental Sight with Words of the Ancients and dropped the Shugenja's armor proficiency altogether.

We've had fun with it in playtesting, and I hope you feel the same!

Well, this new update pushes it a little further from being melee-oriented (we pull light armor proficiency.) That being said, we did playtest earth/wind a few times in melee: our playtester was a little cowardly, but never got flattened. The strength of this class is primarily in its spells, however.

Mage Hand Press

There's a little more bookkeeping, but I tried to cut things down as much as possible. If you allies forgets who has a shared scroll, it's not the end of the world -- they expire after 1 day anyway.

Mage Hand Press

How did Earth/Wind hold up in melee for you guys in playtesting? Even with the book keeping I've been on the lookout for a melee leaning caster that wasn't a Warlock of some sort for a new character.

Michael Doyle

I appreciate the flexibility but the level of book keeping seems even scarier than wizard. I know the people I play with, and they don't even remember what potions/scrolls they have from week to week as is nevermind trying to give them more. I like the design but would quickly become a Nagomancer to my party having to remind them who I gave what. >.>

Michael Doyle

I fixed this already. Sorry I forgot to mention it in comments

Mage Hand Press

It doesn't say that in my version - did this get fixed already? Because intensify gravity absolutely affects flying creatures. If anything, it's more dangerous for them, because the added encimberence might make them drop out of the sky, whereupon they take double falling damage.

The Nails of Vecna

There shouldn't be any actual differences (we try to keep things up to date across the board), but if there are differences, this is the more up-to-date one.

Mage Hand Press

Some of these spells are also in the "Tundra Update", would these be considered the more up to date version?

Michael L

Thanks for catching that - can't believe it got by me twice.

Mage Hand Press

I See I See. Thank you kindly good sir and/or madam!

Charles Koeppel

My mistake, but thank you

Just_A_Bit_Sleepy

Wrong post haha -- about 100 gp. I could have sworn I put that somewhere; if not I'll find a place to squeeze it in.

Mage Hand Press

How much are roaches supposed to cost the players if they are trying to buy them?

Just_A_Bit_Sleepy

It's only up to 5th level spells

Dathan

Also you have on the Table of Context the Spell Lost instead of spell List. LOL small thing.

Charles Koeppel

Question por favor! The Blank Scroll skill, does that take one of the spell slots for that available spell level, or is that extra? It says "You have one Blank scroll for each level of spell that you can prepare," Is that included in the number you can prepare per day or is it atop of that, because then you can add one to every spell scrolls per day number. At Level 17 two ninth level spells.

Charles Koeppel

Page 1, First Paragraph: "The it burns at the edges," ( It's always something obvious at the beginning right after you reach the end of a huge project )

Michael Doyle

Intensify Gravity explicitly affects flying creatures. But at the end of the spell it says it doesn't. Whut.

John Hoffman

I'm fairly sure, but I can let you know for sure a little later.

Mage Hand Press

Quick question, does the life/death duality still work for this from the expansion pack?
