Olivia Munn is fluent in Japanese because she grew up there.

2025-11-05 20:56:06 +0000 UTCI appreciate your opinion, and given what MAGA stands for these days, I don't suppose I can blame you for having it. That said, I want to point out to you that you're watching a show where the main character, Will McAvoy, is a Republican. The show portrays pretty perfectly, through his character, what Republican ideals are at their best. There's a not insignificant amount of irony in bringing it up on this particular episode, does it really seem like he hates any group of people based on who they are?

2025-11-05 16:56:47 +0000 UTCIn my opinion but I may be wrong, if someone's LGBTQ+ and ends up voting Republican it has to be because he/she hates another group of people (black, latino or else) and if a person of color ends up Republican, it has to be because he/she hates another community or he/she hates gays.

2025-11-05 15:16:38 +0000 UTCSince this is "The News Room thread" might as well post some 11/4/2025 election night news: - PA keeps its Dem majority on the State Supreme Court- if they had lost that then PA could have changed state election laws for 2026 and 2028 to make PA un-winnable for Dems and no chance in electoral college- almost guaranteeing a President Vance in 2028- near miss avoided - VA flips Gov to Dems, Dem Lt Gov is first Muslim woman elected in history to a US statewide post (Ilhan Omar was a district) with Spanberger getting 25+% margins where Harris only had 17%+, no other US state- even NY, MA, or CA had a female Muslim in a state wide role - VA Atty Gen goes Dem despite "text gate" fake scandal - VA keeps its majority Dems in state house and on path to 64 out of 100 seats- largest Dem majority since 1987 in Reagan Administration and close to 67 supermajority after fear it could lose state house- Thank you Elon/DOGE for firing workers who vote - with VA control of Gov and State House can redistrict and ADD 2-3 additional US House seats for 2026 to add to CA Prop 50 (if it passes_ - NJ Gov is Dem win by 15% when fear that it might be 2%-5% - Mamdani Social Democrat beats Cuomo for NYC mayor by about 10% after Cuomo endorsed by the likes of Stephen Miller + Trump - SC flips multiple local seats Rep to Dem - Maine votes down ballot initiative to require Voter ID an restrict mail in ballots and drop boxes and votes UP initiative to restrict gun rights of high risk people (those with orders of protection against them for spouse abuse and violence etc) - GA flips multiple local seats from Rep to Dem with 60%+ to 40% wins where Rep incumbent had 50%+ in prior election- 10% plus shift in GA- bodes well for Osoff to HOLD his GA Dem Senate seat in 2026 and maybe take GA in 2028 Presidential the way Biden did in 2020 Only real negative is Texas PASSES ballot initiative to DENY any bail for people indicted for violent crimes and SA- i.e. you are locked up until you are exonerated. (I actually AGREE with locking up SA people, but not other crimes unless they are habitual Domestic Violence or Gun crimes) CA Prop 50 for US House 5 seat swing to Dems 63% Yes 37% No Overall BIG Blue Wave

2025-11-04 22:43:45 +0000 UTCIn case no one's told you, Olivia Munn spent a good portion of her childhood in Tokyo, so her Japanese is legit. She has said she no longer considers herself fluent, but with probably a little work with a Japanese coach she's perfectly convincing. This is a great episode and GOD, I love Don in this. His disbelief in the control room, his amused, feet-on-the-desk, waiting-for-the-shitshow afterwards ("Ten seconds And just remember we've all been there.") and his obvious worry about whether he's losing Maggie... it was at this point he started becoming one of my favorite characters on the show.

2025-11-04 18:26:28 +0000 UTCFrankly- you are very spot on why "culture wars", from EITHER side, don't solve anything. The Left attacks poor people who look to religious and cultural traditions as they watch their world falling apart while being used by their own political party and don't implement policies that help everyone OR do institution building. The Right DID and it took 50 years to "pay off"- but it was cynical corporate media, echo chambers and greed to seize and maintain power. The movie No Country for Old Men is exactly about how "traditional" society of the 1950s where "men are tough" doesn't work and but isn't replaced by a an accepted cultural structure. Anything built is on "a basement of sand", is not accepted, and collapses into violence and death in the main male characters and stochastic retribution in the form of Friendo. There is NO excuse for using your religion to turn away people from your restaurant to create masked segregation and do end runs to laws regarding discrimination in public accommodations. But there ALSO should not be tolerance for desecrating St. Patrick's Cathedral with used condoms thrown onto the steps of the church during parades because the NYC and Long Island Archdioceses are full of a$$holes. The West rebuilt Germany and Japan through massive aid after WW2 because they HAD a functioning set of social institutions as a foundation. The invasion of Iraq was doomed because it was three countries glued together by the UK as their empire collapsed and they were 3 different cultures. I argue that the 1960s protestors just pointed at what was wrong- which WAS needed- blamed LBJ who had done the MOST to help the poor and minorities since FGR, and proposed nothing to replace it. That is why Bernie Sanders was a joke and just served to spoil Hillary. Rant all you want about Billionaires, but propose things that are not politically achievable and without spending 20 years on the foundation, and you are just an old crank yelling in the public park from a soap box. With old ways torn apart and nothing to build on we were sold consumerism by Don Draper and hate by Reagan, Gingrich and MAGA.

2025-11-04 18:03:16 +0000 UTCYup, Joe 100% called me out when he said he could hear the keyboard clacking. ;) I am a gay Republican - though proudly NOT a Trump supporter, in fact I did phone banking as part of the Republicans for Harris subgroup during the last campaign. To understand my little subgroup as a people, you have to appreciate how the LGBT rights movement has shifted since the 1990s. Back then, the goal that everyone strived for was society's complete and total indifference, and THAT was a worthy cause. I don't need people in this country to like me or stand at the edge of the bed and cheer me on when I bring another guy home, and I don't care if some people think I'm going to Hell (that's between God and myself anyway); I just need them to tolerate me enough to not discriminate against me in housing and employment, and not physically attack me. That's what it used to be about, and that's more than fair. Somewhere along the line, the gay community at large moved the goalpost from indifference to forced acceptance, and while that might be nice for me, personally, it flies in the face of the concepts of liberty and freedom of expression that this country is founded upon. I mean, really? Forcing some poor guy to make art to celebrate something they personally find abhorrent? How is that okay, and where does it stop? Should a Christian cake artist be forced to make a cake that says "Hail Satan" on it with X-rated nymphs all along the rim just because they're in that business? Are we really okay with firing people because they won't use someone's preferred pronouns? That it's gotten so bad that the ACLU - remember, the people who used to embody the concept of defending speech they disagreed with to the degree that they stood up for the KKK and NAMBLA on principle - has actually advocated the censoring and burning of books with anti-gay messaging in them? Honestly, part of the reason we have to deal with MAGA now is because they are justly asserting that it has gone way too far - so far that they were vulnerable to being lured in by this snake oil salesman we have in what's left of the White House today. Anyway, that's my perspective, and how someone like me can exist in this world. Not necessarily trying to convince anyone, just sharing the logic for posterity.

2025-11-04 15:45:24 +0000 UTCOh yeah. I was on the fence a bit going in on whether or not Will and MacKenzie will rekindle their relationship, but the ring solidifies it.

2025-11-04 12:11:45 +0000 UTCI agree with you. It was definitely a fair line of questioning. He just went intensely hard at the guy, and I think the substance of his completely reasonable point got lost because of it. The most effective question he asked was the last one about Rick Santorum thinking the spokesman was unfit to be a teacher.
