Midnights (The Til Dawn Edition) by Taylor Swift FIRST TIME REACTION

The next album on the T Swift Deep Dive: Midnights (The Til Dawn Edition)

I was told this is the correct version of the album to listen to. She owns the masters and it has deluxe tracks.

Jack Antonoff can you please score the soundtrack of my life? lol I just really enjoy whatever is going on in his head.

Let me know your favorite tracks off the album and help me break down the lyrics. Enjoy!

Midnights (The Til Dawn Edition) by Taylor Swift FIRST TIME REACTION

Comments

I think you might've accidentally flipped the meaning of Sweet Nothing! Its not that he didn't see her, its that he didnt want anything from her in the way that a "user" would

Sabine Dordick

Genuinely curious - why don't you pause to google the answers to more of the questions you have? You so often ask things that would def be findable on the internet, and then just choose to leave yourself in the dark.

Sabine Dordick

Not sure if you go back to old videos to look at comments but just in case I wanted to say your reactions are amazing and I can't stop watching. One thing I've noticed with you and other people that have reacted to her is that you are very good at picking up lyrics on the songs about relationships but don't understand other songs that are more about the music industry and her experience growing up in it. You're on your own kid, Clara Bow, and Who's afraid of little old me fall in this category.

Meredith

Not sure of this was mentioned at this point before but a little piece of fun fan trivia: back when she started dating Travis, during The Eras Tour. she changed the famous line from Karma to : "Karma is the guy on the Chiefs coming straight home to me". Usually Taylor only changed the lyrics on shows where Travis was there watching her perform or if the Chiefs won a game and he couldnt attend đŸ’đŸ»â€â™€ïž

Ella

The "blood soaked gown" is also a referrence to the night of the VMAs when Kanye West interrupted her. After that she was also set to perform and she did while wearing a red dress (blood soaked). So even though she was in a way humiliated that night, it took nothing away from her love to perform and connect with her fans in that way, no one can take that away from her

anfilias

With your admiration of Jack, I'm surprised you haven't reacted to one of the albums from his own band, Bleachers. Such an amazingband.

Susan

Loving your content! Did I miss the 3am edition reaction? I don’t see it, but I am dying to hear what you thought.

Jessica Martin

Agree. With these comments. Unless you are planning to react to folklore twice, I would react to the Long Pond Sessions on Disney over the folklore album. I love them both for different reasons. Folklore (Album) was recorded during Covid-19 and done "remotely." The Long Pond Sessions is the first time that Taylor, Jack, and Aaron got together to play the music. It includes all the folklore songs, but is acoustic, and includes brief background discussions about the meanings during a difficult time.

JettHayes

Totally agree and I wouldn't put anything between those albums. Listen to folklore and go straight into evermore :)

Isabella Setta

For your journey I recommended starting out with the Miss Americana documentary and then dive into the rest of albums. Also just now that Taylor produces the album with Jack is not just him coming up with the production. You’ll be able to see some of that in the documentary.

Camille Garcia

Definitely the best way. Then watch Miss Americana

Brandi Lemons

definitely do the long pond sessions for folklore. And try to find the explicit one. I think they lose so much when they bleep the cussing.

Brandi Lemons

Thanks Jana!

Daniel Juke

hahaha so much we shouldnt have been jamming to

Daniel Juke

I have one! Let me find the link

Daniel Juke

definitely react to taylor’s performance of “dear john” from her speak now world tour!! it’s brilliant

Leonie Thieme

I agree with this!!

Z

I recommend watching Ally Sheehan she’s a Australian YouTube and she makes videos like you but she’s also makes hour long videos for every era and she is too good

Mitchell

one recommendation: react to the folklore long pond sessions before doing evermore:) folklore and evermore are sister albums that are ultimately tied together, so listening to the “first chapter” (folklore :)) first would be the best way to go before getting into evermore!

Leonie Thieme

definitely to that after having listened to all the albums!! :) amazing way to wrap it up 😌

Leonie Thieme

i can’t wait for you to listen to the long pond sessions đŸ„čđŸ„č

Leonie Thieme

something very interesting to know in case you haven’t heard/ read about it: every “track five” on taylor’s albums starting with debut has special sentimental value to her. in her “folklore long pond studio sessions” (which you HAVE to react to as your folklore-reaction!!! đŸ™đŸ») she explains that track five is always an extremely intimate, emotional song for her.

Leonie Thieme

veerrrryyy excited for you to listen to dear john on speak now!! đŸ„čđŸ„čđŸ„Č

Leonie Thieme

haha yes definitely, we like to call it the taylor swift cinematic universe!

Martina Teich

Your reactions are very enjoyable :) thanks for cranking out all this content

Jana

You’re literally the only person I’ve seen call out the All for You like Janet reference! 😂 Nothing like jamming out to “Got a nice package, alright. Guess I’m gonna have to ride it tonight” in middle school. đŸ€ŁđŸ€Ł

Maggie Jordan

Danny, is there a chance maybe to open a discord for your channel that we can all discuss the videos with more options than the patreon comments? Cause I read the comments and it's fun to start a conversation but the comments here are kinda limited

Tal

Oh cool, thank you. I'll send you a DM on Instagram then. Be more than happy to help you and send you whatever you want. I need to upload the long Pond to my Google drive as well. I just don't wanna bother you or Danny So we won't send him the same content twice. I edited together the TTPD set to send to juke and it was so fun but the bummer is it's all fan filmed so the sound quality isn't that great. But I sent him that already. Lol. Though it'll be a long time till he reaches the eras tour. I'll send you a DM on install then later. 😊

Tal

Great reaction! I loved how you got the vibe of Sweet Nothing on 1st listen and loved watching your realization on who Would've Could've Should've is about. I stumbled upon your Fortnight music video reaction on YouTube a few days ago, and now I am here on your Patreon already, extremely excited for your Taylor Swift journey and fully willing to watch you become a Swiftie :) Besides checking out You're losing me as it has already been pointed out, I would also suggest you watch the music videos from the Midnights era next, so you cover all the bases of every album before you move on to the next one. Also, Taylor is known to write amazing prologues to her albums which give quite some insight about what the vibe of the album is and where she is coming from. Anyway, I loved all your Taylor stuff up until now, it is so refreshing that you went into this so open minded and I can't wait for more! :)

monika

yes watch it during the lover era reaction that's when she did NPR tiny desk :)

niccala

yes you will love the long pond sessions. they had to record the full folklore album separately due to covid and it was the first time taylor, aaron and jack performed it together.

niccala

It's like it was meant to happen for you friend haha. Hope you're doing well. Enjoy!

Daniel Juke

her mind is so bright lol amazing

Daniel Juke

Hits Different is AMAZING. I have the bonus track written down. I'll do that next. I'm really excited for the long pond sessions. I love stuff like that

Daniel Juke

Oh these are some tasty tid bits. I had no idea she wrote that Calvin Harris song. Banger lol.

Daniel Juke

so you're basically telling me she's an incredible novelist with themes woven throughout all her music? I'm absolutely gonna need all your help during this journey hahaha. Thanks!

Daniel Juke

I had no idea she had a Tiny Desk lol

Daniel Juke

I will when it's time :)

Daniel Juke

Thanks!

Daniel Juke

Great taste!

Daniel Juke

Glitch is so good!! That's the best part of art, it's all subjective :)

Daniel Juke

You broke it down so beautifully. Thank you for that. My favorite part about her music so far is how relatable the lyrics can be. They're so vulnerable. This song is gonna hit harder now that I know what it means. Appreciate you.

Daniel Juke

:)

Daniel Juke

Thank you! I'm gonna need the grace lol I'm already very impressed with her pen.

Daniel Juke

Interesting! I'll have to listen to it again. The first time through it felt somewhat toxic to me. Like the person didn't want much depth from her. Just surface level romance. I'll listen to it again from your perspective :)

Daniel Juke

Same Tal! lol

Daniel Juke

Adding that song to my list now! Thank you for being so willing to help. I'm overwhelmed with the kindness yall are showing me. I'll definitely be tapping into your knowledge for this journey. Appreciate you!

Daniel Juke

I will try to remember next time about track 5. I remember reading about that during my ttpd reaction. Thanks for the break down as well :)

Daniel Juke

I liked that album. Had no idea who produced lol

Daniel Juke

Thank you for clearing up YOYOK! I'm definitely gonna miss the meaning on a lot of these songs at first and appreciate all the help. Had to twerk!! It was too good :)

Daniel Juke

Do not apologize!! I really appreciate this. I'll make sure to do Folklore before Evermore. This will be the schedule :)

Daniel Juke

Can't wait haha

Daniel Juke

Thanks for the heads up Dennis!

Daniel Juke

It’s crazy you posted this yesterday. I just listened to Midnights for the first time on Thursday. Can’t wait to catch up on all your reactions. đŸ‘đŸŸđŸ’™

Carlos

Taylor dated John Mayer when she was 19 & he was 32. She wrote Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve after seeing John perform at the 2021 Grammy’s. She was 32 when she wrote it and the song is track 19 on Midnights. She doesn’t use Should’ve in this song except in the chorus because Should’ve is used in Dear John .

JoAnn Burrage

This reaction was everything!! my favorites on midnights are maroon, would've could've should've, hits different and dear reader. Also please react to you're losing me. it was released separately but written during midnights era about her troubled relationship with joe. please react to folklore next and then watch the long pond studio session afterwards. she sings the folklore album in a cabin studio with jack and aaron and explains the concept behind each song beforehand. then do evermore!! ❀❀

niccala

See actually I take Sweet Nothings as a love song. It was written by Taylor & Joe Alwyn. It’s about the appreciation of a lover who doesn’t want anything in return and provides a sense of security and peace within the relationship when the outside world is always screaming and people always want something from her. This song was inspired by Paul McCartney and his relationship with his wife Linda. They spent the summer in Wicklow in 1971 after the Beatles breakup. Paul wrote that he would go for a run and come home and tell Linda a poem and she would say “What a mind”

JoAnn Burrage

So about Midnights...it confused the crap out of us Swifties trying to decipher the songs. Everything only became clear once TTPD was released. We didn't know Taylor and Matty Healy had a 10 year situationship going on. We believed Taylor and Joe was locked down and a forever love. Upon reflection the Joe songs read very differently now, the clues were all there. Midnights turned out to be a breakup album, with a bunch of the songs already about Matty. High Infidelity is about Calvin, on April 29th he gave an interview where they asked him if he would ever collaborate with Taylor and he said no never, but she wrote his song This is what you came for and used a pseudonym. That night she was at Gigi Hadid's birthday party in LA at a bar on the corner of Sunset and Vine, incidentally the night she first met Joe Alwyn...after that came the Met Gala and the Tom Hiddelston relationship, Joe was also at that Met Gala. The touch of the hand referenced in Mastermind is alluded to in her song Gorgeous on the Reputation album and known to be about Joe, Sunset and Vine is also referenced in Gorgeous.

Ilka van Schalkwyk

taylor is really good with details in her songwriting and work in general. like the midnights standard version is about 13 sleepless nights, she continues ttpd with the song Fortnight, so the 14th day after 13 nights. she also often leaves some lookouts to the next album at the end of the previous ones. like Dear reader is a direct hint to ttpd, but especially in hits different she mentions „i switched out all these kens“ that is picked up on „my boy only breaks his favourite toys“. she also says „have they come to take me away“ when in fortnight the first line is „i was supposed to be sent away but they forgot to come and get me“ . when you’re going to listen to „you’re losing me“ which is a vault song from the midnights era there are a lot of lyrics that are picked up in „so long london“. Vault songs were established when she started re-releasing her first 6 albums, as a treat for the fans she adds some songs that didn’t made the original album cut. for midnights i think she couldn’t put out „you’re losing me“ because her breakup with Joe Alwyn wasn’t public yet, so she released it later. when you’re going to folklore definitely check out the long pond studio session on Disney it gives a lot of context and is just beautiful. also the snow on the beach more lana version was released bc a lot of people were kinda complaining Lana didn’t had an own verse, lana later in an interview said, that if a song is already perfect she appears as a producer, „don’t fix anything that isn’t broken“ she also said that she’s able to mimic any voice so she’s actually all over the song. i think it’s possible to hear that, but she just doesn’t sing alone on the standard version. anyways great reaction, can’t wait for more. taylor is also directing all her music videos since the lover era and the Midnights videos are really good!

Martina Teich

Please dont forget to do "You're Losing Me (From The Vault)" Its a Midnights song. It's on streaming just as a single.

SwiftZilla

I highly recommend reading the prologue to each album before listening to it.

SwiftZilla

You should react the eras tour and also Taylor swift’s npr tiny desk concert.

Amy A.

can you react to the eras tour

sunny!

My main go to songs on repeat from midnights is always: -Hits Different -Maroon -Midnight Rain -The Great War -Paris -Bejeweled -Lavender Haze

Sonny S.

I'm really excited for you to react to miss Americana! Love your videos!

Baillie Williams

I think he just forgot to type it on screen. I heard him say it. His order would be: Midnight Evermore Miss Americana Doc Folklore Lover Fearless (or Debut) Speak Now Red 1989 reputation

Sydney

This is my exact journey. Woah. đŸ€Ł

Sydney

I’m loving all these Tay Sway reactions—keep them coming! This journey is just getting started, and I can’t wait to see where it takes you. And when it’s all said and done, I hope you’re ready to watch the Eras Tour
because by then, we might just have Eras Tour: Version 2—iykyk! đŸ«¶đŸŒđŸ«Ą

Sonny S.

Another Glitch stan yay! It doesn’t seem to be a fan favorite and I’ve never understood - it’s SO good! Idk if anyone pointed it out but you seemed to be picking up on how reflective this album is and in her initial announcement it was marketed as a journey through different sleepless nights. That’s why the topics/periods of her life she’s referencing vary so much. Definitely also recommend checking out the vault track for this one called You’re Losing Me before moving on. đŸ–€

kelsie

Also, I just finished this reaction and I’m so glad you enjoyed Midnights. I was a fan of Taylor’s early work growing up, mostly because I’m a country fan. And then when 1989 came out, I sorta stopped listening just because I didn’t listen to much pop at the time. Over the years I’ve become a pop fan, but when Midnights came out it was like I heard Taylor for the first time. From there, I watched Miss Americana and it really opened my eyes to how remarkable of a human she is, and it made me want to check out Reputation right away. So, that’s what I did. I watched the Rep Tour and from there, it was over. I had officially plunged myself into the biggest rabbit hole of my life. Discovering Taylor Swift is like exploring Wonderland (she has a song about that, btw 😂). There is so much lore and so much personal meaning in her work. It’s truly like reading her diary and feeling like you’ve known her your entire life
except, we really don’t *know her.

Tyler Ward

So, You’re On Your Own Kid is basically her talking about a boy she was in love with in the first verse, the second verse is about her moving to Nashville to chase her dreams but feeling the pressure of having to have a perfect body to keep up with other celebrities, and then the bridge is talking about all the criticism she takes from the public (hence, the blood soaked gown reference). “I looked around in a blood soaked gown, but I saw something they can’t take away”, meaning they can judge her and paint her out to be a villain all they want to, but they can’t take away the empire she built all by herself. So the song is just her saying that, no matter where you’re at in life, whether it’s crushing on a boy, chasing your dreams, or people judging you
you’re the only person you can really depend on. And it might be scary at times, but you’ll pull through in the end. And you come out stronger on the other side.

Tyler Ward

Bigger than the whole sky is such a sad song, not sure if its regarding a miscarriage but in that context it is devastating

Madison Sprowl

You can DM me on insta if you want. Bellapeterson I dont have the rep tour so maybe i can add that to the doc â˜ș Everything else i think i have đŸ«¶đŸ»

Isabella Peterson

đŸ˜‚đŸ«‚ Wait. We can't send each other's DM's? I wanted to ask you what you have in your documents cause I thought of making Danny an edit of the music videos and the behind the scenes together in one video, but if you have it already organized then it's not necessary haha. I don't wanna send Danny the same stuff as you, so he won't get everything twice. BTW, if you need anything, I save almost every Taylor performance, tour and project on my pc. So if you need anything I'll be happy to help if I can 😊 I have miss Americana, reputation tour, long Pond.. And I plan on uploading them to my Google drive.

Tal

Anytime! Thanks for the reaction!

Ryan Kelleher

Good idea!

Ryan Kelleher

People probably already said this, but the only one you are missing on your schedule is the Lover album, which she does own! Great reaction! Can't wait to see more!

Emily Kazanfer

You're totally fine if you miss stuff!! Her songs have deep layers, no one gets it right away and many are still mysteries lol. She takes a lot of pride in her writing for that, I think.

broccolit0

I Just call it ”i broke my leg and channeled my adhd into writing docs for a month” 😂

Isabella Peterson

Sooo glad you picked up on Sweet Nothing as being a song about not feeling satisfied by a relationship. Because Midnights came out before the breakup, people initially thought it was a cute love song

rit

Love you Isabella!! I'm jealous of organized people!!

Tal

Perfect order! đŸ«¶đŸ»

Isabella Peterson

Jumped to your patreon now. Im so here for your taylor journey! You are the perfect person to watch this journey with. There is one more song you should react to before moving on and that is: You’re losing me (from the vault) Its a song that was originally released as an exclusive on a midnight cd but became so wildly popular with her fans that she released it on streaming. Also you should really do folklore first than evermore after this. Mostly because they are sister albums and was released less than a year from each other. So it will make sense for you to do it in that order. Btw i have some documents on each era that contains all the basic info of live performances, music videos, interviews connecting to the era and so on that i’ve sent reactors in the past. If thats something you’re interested in, let me know. I will dm it to you in that case â˜ș I also think that before moving era the music videos are great but there is also a speach she did at NYU. Its an amazing speach but also has sone midnights references in it as she did that before the release of this album. https://youtu.be/OBG50aoUwlI?si=0RAU-ApXb8Liw0fK

Isabella Peterson

Like someone has already mentioned, I don’t personally view you’re on your own kid as a love song. It’s very much a journey through her life encompassed in one song. She starts off liking a boy and wanting to stay in the town she wants to get out of for the boy but realised at the end that he really didn’t care for her. This heartbreak leads to her writing lyrics for the first time and gives her a renown purpose in life, once she’s set on wanting to do music she realises that everyone wants to make it big in the music scene and her dreams aren’t really that rare. The last chorus and bridge section shows what being successful made her gain/lose in life and at the end she comes to the realisation that she did all that herself, that life continues on and no matter what happens you still have yourself. For future reference track 5’s in all her albums are her most vulnerable, it’s a thing. Not just a fandom theory! Taylor does it on purpose and said so. So for ttpd it was so long London about her 6 year relationship and for midnights it was you’re on your own kid about her life.

Jenny V

I've been so impressed with Jack ever since his work on Melodrama with Lorde. It's like a more unhinged Midnights

rit

I loved this react! Glitch and Hits Different are my favs on this album too💕 the most meaningful for me are Bigger Than The Whole Sky & Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve. It’s like she voiced my thoughts on my growth from trauma but still remembering it. Funny you asked cause she’s in the movie Valentines Day. Also the Hannah Montana movie. And she voices in the Lorax. Yes there is an Anti-Hero mv that I think you’ll love. Lavender Haze, Bejewled & Karma have mv. You’re on Your Own Kid (YOYOK) isn’t a love song. If you related think about competitiveness and self growth. What you do to get ahead and what you learn along the way. The blood soaked gown to Carrie reference works especially when thinking of the competitiveness of the industry and the cruel pranks that have been played on Tay by peers. I know you’re going backwards but Folklore before Evermore is advised due to they are sister albums and they play better that way. Your schedule for albums has me excited đŸ”„ I loved the Twerking to Taylor moment 😂💕

Z

A suggestion for the order to go in Hopefully this makes it easier for your schedule wise! - folklore and evermore should be in that order specifically as people have said, they’re sister albums! Folklore has long pond sessions which is just really interesting to see the thought process behind each song plus she sings all the songs on the album really beautifully. Evermore sadly doesn’t have long pond sessions (😭) - Lover (this is the first album she owned) make sure you add the song all of the girls you loved before to your album reaction, it’s a lover bonus track but it’s just not on the album it was released a bit later - Miss Americana doc (lover and miss Americana can be interchangeable, it depends on if you want to know the lover songs before going into the doc or not) - If reputation comes out by that time I suggest you do that after lover but if not I like you going back to the very beginning like you suggested (reputation has a fantastic filmed concert) - Self titled album (if that comes out) - Fearless (fearless has a doc/concert called journey to fearless which shows her process of getting ready for the tour and some live clips of the tour for songs) - Speak now (speak now has a concert available to watch highly highly recommend) - red (this one is as long as ttpd so take your time! It has a recorded version of the tour but that was never released so sadly no concert for this one) - 1989 (1989 also has a movie concert, the editing is wild but it’s still really fun to see the songs live) - If reputation doesn’t come out soon then it should be here in the timeline - Then ERAS TOUR WHOOP, the filmed version doesn’t include the ttpd set so I suggest someone send it to you once you get to that point (it’s a long way away 😂) Sorry for the long comment, hope this is helpful in some way!

Jenny V

The reference was from her song Daylight "step into the daylight & let it go", but she said Lover ultimately fit the album better. She's continued to reference it though, & had a dress on tour fans nicknamed the Daylight dress because the gradient mirrored the color temperature scale.

M

Oh yeah, she sings on Half of My Heart w/ John. Red flag in & of itself. She echoes him in the guitar chords in Dear John. You’ll definitely want to check out the tour performance for that song from the Speak Now tour.

M

“a little bit of sexual energy on this one” oh just wait until you see her performance of vigilante shit at the era’s tour😭😭

Lauren S

Also, heads up: you’re going to want to look up the meanings of the songs on folklore bc many of them are stories about characters that Taylor made up, and some of the songs are connected. Just wanted to let you know ahead of time so you’re not lost! đŸ€Ł

Dennis Roberts

Juke, I feel like Taylor is getting you to show us an even more vulnerable side of your personality, and it’s so cool to see! 💕 Great schedule, but I agree with Ryan that you should do folklore before evermore, as they are sister albums that Taylor made during COVID. Definitely do all the music videos from Midnights! Track 5 on her albums is always the most emotional song- in “You’re On Your Own, Kid”, she was actually telling the story of her rise to fame from being a teen, and how she’s navigated the music industry.

Dennis Roberts

Enjoy :)

Daniel Juke

Do you know why she changed it?

Daniel Juke

I'll make sure to include the long pond sessions :)

Daniel Juke

Okay thanks for the heads up! :)

Daniel Juke

Ohh, unexpected. What a pleasant surprise. Thank you so much! Even though Midnights is my least favorite Taylor album along with Lover, it's still a Taylor album and as a huge swiftie, I still love it. Also watching new people reacting to Taylor is always fun, no matter what😄 Ohh, I already started editing for you all the music videos with the behind the scenes clips together so you won't miss anything.

Tal

Her final album before Covid, Lover, was originally titled Daylight so the duality of Midnights is spot on in the larger picture as well.

M

Love the schedule! Like Ryan said I would listen to folklore before evermore, as they’re kind of a continuation of each other! She has the long pond sessions on Disney plus that kind of gives insight into those songs! cool to hear her talk through her creative process with jack and aaron!!

Lauren S

I agree 100%!!!

Dennis Roberts

Juke! do folklore before evermore. They are sister albums. You’ll see way more progression that way.

Ryan Kelleher
