One thing this interview has made me think about is the Teal mentality that if a seat is not “winnable” by the greens then they are the best option. Which like, seems pragmatic on the surface but I wonder if this actually just eats away any potential increase in greens primary vote, which would just end up just hardening the “unwinnable” nature of the seat in peoples eyes for another 3 years. It also hinges on the teal candidates actually winning the seat! Which is not garuanteed obviously.

I completely understand where she's coming from. Having just moved to the seat of Kooyong. A long held liberal seat taken by teal Monique Ryan. There's a gapping hole between Greens and Labor. Unfortunately it the break in the social pattern that's needed for many people.

Best of luck to Amy! 🤞🏻💚 I thought the conversation with Kate was very respectful & robust - nicely done Emerald.

Another thing is that Kate was right in saying that some people will just never vote Greens. Better to have other Leftists on the ballot, than to have only LNP and other Rightist options. Even with practically the same policies, some independents will look much more attractive to a whole bunch of voters poisoned by anti-Greens propaganda. It all works to shift things in the direction of progressive policy and outcomes.

Oh fuck! Thanks Peter

Because of the Liberal HTV (Kate Hulett, above Labor, above Greens), which has high follow rates, of these two left of Labor candidates, Kate Hulett has a much better chance of winning. Adam Bandt got elected in 2010 off Liberal preferences and there's a similar opportunity here. Tactically, I would vote for Kate if I lived in Freo (and Green in the Senate). That's no slight on Amy and strength to her campaign which will be important for the over all effort both statewide and in Freo - but Kate outpolling Greens is the ideal outcome this time around.

This makes sense to me but I’m wondering what “unification” means in this context? Greens dropping out of the race? I think Greens skepticism of “Teal” candidates is generally valid, especially when they’re good on climate but Labor-right on social welfare spending, but Kate seems like an exception where she’s much closer to Greens policy than someone like Allegra Spender, for example. So it feels uncomfortable to put her in the same boat, because she’s probably not! My take is that in these situations we need to spend a bit more effort telling people they should put Greens/independent 1 or 2 in the order of their choice. People don’t understand preferential voting which sucks, but using that as an excuse to bag on people running outside the Greens who are very politically similar seems like a misstep (and a waste of energy)

Hi Emerald, I totally get your critiques of Kate Hulett's running as a community independent in Freo, BUT... you really seemed to struggle to actually take on board Kate's arguments about why she believes it is beneficial for her to be doing what she is. I broadly agree with much of what you seem to struggle with on this, but I also think your resistance to Kate's running as a Lefitst community independent illustrates how the Right have been able to make the strides in the public consciousness and in terms of actual power that they have. Basically, and Kate tried to articulate this but possibly didn't really manage to make this point clearly enough, the Right (globally and nationally) are very, very good at unifying for their Rightist agenda regardless of differences between groups, factions and agents. The Left are totally shit at bonding over our common ground, of which there is much, and waste a lot of energy siloing ourselves in our political identity groups, rather than creating an umbrella under which we can all fit and work towards shifting the Overton Window to the Left. The more candidates who are pushing a truly socially just, inclusive, ecologically conscious and anti-capitalist message, the more that will become the discourse beyond ourselves amongst the wider community. Instead, we have the battle of the Bozos of the Right, the far Right and the pretending-to-be-Left-but-shifting-Right-to-make-themselves-appear-relevant which is setting the agenda and shaping the public discourse Righwards. The Greens are easy to pick off because we are often out on our own as Leftist candidates in so many seats, and I say this as a member and former candidate. We have to start working with Leftist allies who are working towards the same broad outcomes. Yes, there are many differences, but if we don't unify on our vast areas of common ground, we will be too easily crushed. United we are strong.

Umm, guys, you might want to spell Fremantle correctly
