Mr. Nuthatch #7 - Part 2
Added 2023-09-15 06:34:18 +0000 UTCWe were first introduced to Mr. Nuthatch as he struggled through his ‘Intake Appointment’ in Episode #1 of Birdz. Episodes 1 and 2 showed how Dr. Morty Storkowitz used his educational and professional experience as a psychotherapist to help Mr. Nuthatch discuss his insecurities along with how he protected himself from the trauma he had long been burdened with. This lead to Mr. Nuthatch seeing Dr. Storkowitz as a ‘Professional Friend’ during Episode 2 as he opened up more-and-more to Morty about how and why he had decided to pursue psychotherapy to improve upon his outlook on life.
Episodes 3 and 4 show a Mr. Nuthatch that is far different than the one we first met in Episode 1. However, as is more common than not, Episodes 5 and 6 showed Mr. Nuthatch experiencing a relapse / setback in his mental health journey. It is experiencing these kind of setbacks after making such noteworthy progress that test the strength of the ‘Professional Friendship’ that had been established between the psychotherapist and their patient.
If the patient and their therapist are able to maintain a strong ‘Doctor / Patient Relationship’, setbacks, as noticed with Mr. Nuthatch’s progress in Episodes 5 and 6, will be worked out in a way that strengthens the ‘Professional Friendship’ by opening new opportunities for the therapist to help their patient move further ahead in their mental health journey.
It is in Episode 7 of Birdz that we see a strong example of how a relapse / setback over the course of Mr. Nuthatch’s treatment not only strengthened the ‘Professional Friendship’, but also provided Dr. Storkowitz a remarkable opportunity to use supervised ‘Immersion therapy’ to help Mr. Nuthatch see that his future is far from bleak.

The second half of Birdz’s Episode 7 shows how Dr. Morty Storkowitz had learned to use the ‘Professional Friendship’ he had successfully established with Mr. Nuthatch to ensure his patient was ready and able to improve himself through ‘Immersion Therapy’.

Earlier in the episode, Dr. Storkowitz had identified an activity, migration, in which would serve as a supervised experience to show his patient how he was capable of making progress in his mental health journey both inside and outside of his regularly scheduled office visits. All that had been discussed during each session, coupled with what had been observed during Mr. Nuthatch’s setbacks / relapses in Episodes 4 and 5, is being used to empower the anxious bird through a ‘Hand Holding’ strategy that is much like how a parent would go about teaching their child how to ride a bike.
The following clips from the second half of Episode 7 show just how Dr. Storkowitz gradually goes from ‘holding hands’ with Mr. Nuthatch to knowing just the right time to ‘let go’ to show his patient that he had always had the ability to successfully take part in migration.
