Peak Time EP 1 Reaction

Yo here we gooo! I know I'm a bit late but will be doing this once a week to keep the diversity in weekly content. If ever I find myself with more free time, I will try and catch up faster.

Please no spoilers on who the groups are unless I've touched on them on the reaction already thank you 😊

Comments

My ULTs NTX & DKB being in on the same survival show made my life 10x better✋🏻🥹

Charlie Boqvist

I'm all for Team 13:00. They have all the right balance of Vocals, Dance and Visual. I feel like they can really represent the 4th Generation very well. Kudos to BAE173!

kjleexxvii

SIDE NOTE: I love business talks with Jeff, it makes me so intrigued and what JEFF discusses about these marketing problems within companies is straight FACTS. Love to hear it JEFF! (ESP your personal experiences!)

Anika Bhattacharya

Loving the 2nd gen panel! Can't wait for the next ep <3

Irieezy.

I watched this episode 2 days before you upload your reaction so you are not the only one that is late

Kim Nele Lohr

I m watching this for the first time with you , so i m very excited🥰🥰

I think this happens more than you realize. For example Brave Girls, the current line up also doesn't have any original members, that's why on Queendom2 it said they debuted in 2016 although the group originally debuted much earlier. I think it happens quite often with rather unsuccessful groups, they have a lot of lineup changes along the way, it doesn't just happen at once where all the members leave and then you just get new ones, it happens gradually so it makes sense that they're still the same group. So for this group that I recognized they had members leave and come in all the time so it's no surprise that they're left with completely new members. I'm sure part of the reason why there's rarely a rebrand with those groups is because they don't have that kind of money, I guess companies of groups like this that are just barely hanging on just thrust in their trainees as new members when another one leaves and hope for a miracle that'll give them recognition or something🤷‍♀️ they don't really have the luxury of thinking about wether the group brand suits them or not. Also I checked while watching, the last release I was aware of from this group was in 2018, after that I practically haven't heard from them anymore except for one member going on a survival show (successfully!) and former members who I follow and I was surprised to see they realeased a song in 2021 which was this lineup's unofficial debut.

Mali

Just to share, Shim Jae Won (judge) is a very long time performance director in SM (I believe almost 20 years now or more). He was a member of a group debuted in SM then decided to stay in SM after they disbanded.

eve_ss

yes definitely less unnecessary drama so far! I love the super supportive ambiance from the other groups as well

seth james

ya theres a ton of groups out there and its so competitive. I do feel like a lot of them go under the radar because of the lack of proper marketing. like some of the groups here, some dont even have staff so what more about knowing how to properly market their idols T_T and yes the part time idols are definitely making an impact and have a bright future in this show I can tell!

seth james

im 100% open to collaborating with DKB especially after seeing them here! ive watched some of their dance videos before and theyre just so talented!

seth james

I feel like a rebrand is in order when nothing about the original group is there anymore. do their group name/concept even match the new members? LOL

seth james

that's 100% fair

seth james

this is a lot of info so thank you! I really appreciate you taking the time to write this out. ive learned a lot!

seth james

Ahh thanks for doing this show, Jeff! I feel like I haven’t seen you in so long. You even have dark hair now lol. It looks great on you! And I absolutely agree with you on bad marketing on top of the companies being on the smaller side. It becomes harder for them gain traction which is very unfortunate for the groups because they are very very talented. Collaboration with YT content creators is a really good way to go since it’s a platform that reaches a wide ray of audience. I actually know most of the groups on this show through Edward’s channel, especially DKB (i hope you can collaborate with them in the future 😭) I’ve seen DKB perform in person TWICE and their stamina and dancing are off the charts! Also the nicest most genuine guys ever. Still the best concert I’ve been to and the two friends I brought along with me (they didn’t know a single thing about DKB) became fans! Anyway, I watched this show because of them but Vanner is really stealing my heart. Fell in love seconds after hearing their stories and fell even more when they started performing. They’re doing really really good on the show (performance and support wise). I think they’re a very strong winning candidate.

Star Galaxy

OMG THE TEAM THAT DID GO GO😭 I know them, I really didn't expect this. You don't want to be spoiled about who they are so I won't say it. I went to their concert 6 years ago, they still had some original members and some others who joined later so I haven't actually seen any of the guys that are in the group now. I only recognized who they are because I saw one of them is called Kiyong and I remember that he joined the group in 2018.

Mali

when I had no reaction to the joke, you guys were probably like 'ya he doesn't know anything about it' LOL

seth james

See I don’t want Kingdom to change anything about their concept. We have enough suits in kpop. Their concept is one of the most unique and best in kpop. They are also doing better every album in terms of sales. Their uniqueness sets them apart from so many other kpop groups that look and sound the same. 🥰

Doyoungismyult

Not only with Jay Park but also for Tiffany I believe 😂 (as Tiffany and Nichkhun of 2PM dated before)

eve_ss

You were talking about having another woman as a judge, great new for you : Mino will go to his military service so he will step out of the show and MoonByul from MAMAMOO will take his position You were talking about social media and publicity, why I'm not even surprised for the GOLDEN CHILD issue? Wollim Ent...they don't change For the editing part, I don't mind them not replaying, honestly because personnally it's oftenwhat's take me out of the performance but I totally understand people wanting a bit more of it. KINGDOM part It was short because they edited the performance since they got eliminated. Full performance : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GKK9YsyK9g It wasn't the greatest but honestly Shangri-La can be really hard to cover, they still did a good jobs. I totally get the concept part still I like the fact they keep it, I love their concept of legendary/mythical kings of the past and from different countries too. I love what they do with that because it's still quite unique when it's come to 4th gen boysgroup. If you have enough imagination I'm sure you can do sometime to not get limited by the concept. DKB E-CHAN childhood friend is Hyunjae (THE BOYZ) by the way DKB is a well balanced group, they aren't just good at dancing, they can back it up with everything else that's why they are one of my favorite 4th gen boysgroup. Junseo and Harry June are crazy dancers, Theo vocal are one of my favorite and E-chan/GK are fantastic rappers I can tell you. They also have members specialized in acrobatics. TEAM 21:00 As you asked, I don't give their name but I will say, I knew their group with the original lineup. However, this team actually got a lot of members change. They had members leaving (if you search on profil for their group, on theex members part, there are literally 12 ex-members noted 😬) and new members keep coming. That's why they said there aren't members from the original lineup. Actually one member is missing on the show since he ended up winning a survival show and debuted with another group, he isn't as young as the others, he was in the group since 2016. Why they doesn't change the group name? Their agency is just shit, the best summary I can give you. TEAM 3:00 (Group who did ENHYPEN) This part will be long I'm sorry for that Jeff I don't give their name but they are one of my ult group with B.A.P and ONF Isaac always trying to stay positive with "We can do it", the energic bean (He is Malaysian) I'm glad you still think there are great vocalist in the group. I will not lie, as a fan, I know this song didn't suit them, I know their potential and there is more to show.I'm sure they would have done better with another choice. You're right about the song suiting Jiahn the best, it's more his style (He is so sweet too, I'm glad he caught your eyes, I had a fancall with him last year, it was such a great experience). I still really liked Inho and Yeontae part, Inpyo had a hard time but I think both Inho and Inpyo would have suited maybe a girlsgroup cover? They are so good when it's come to covering GIRLSGROUP in general. So the long talk start with BOYS24 and the fact you talked about their contract. They are the final group from BOYS24 but in PEAK TIME right now you have several ex-contestants from this show (Heechan and E-CHAN from DKB [E-CHAN is best friend with Jiahn, they trained in Def Danc Skool with Yeontae], Junseo from Hangyul Team but he was quickly eliminated same as Heechan, Ryujei from JWIIVER. I only give you this group name because they were actually eliminated from PEAK TIME and the show decided to not mention them anywhere even cutting their performance. I will give you their performance at the end of my comment.) Detail about BOYS24 It was a survival around 2016, I remember at that time they were describing it as the "PRODUCE 101" boys version, well people at the time described it like that but at the end the survival was totally different in terms of process and rules. MNET changed everything. I'm not going to lie to you, MNET organisation for this show was shit, so bad. Half was aired but behind that, it wasn't the end of the survival show. No lie, BOYS24 is MNET's worse survival show in my opinion (also didn't really receive good response from the public) and the most cruel one. I never felt so bad watching a survival show It's also the one they want to erase at all costs because they fucked so badly. When I say worse it's not that the candidates were bad. MNET was terrible. The emotional/psychological violence and mistreatment that all these boys have received on this show is despicable. For the broadcast part, the participants were separated into several UNIT, they had several missions/covers. The hardest thing in BOYS24 was the elimination system. First elimination, the judges had to chose two participants in the unit for the elimination, this is where the worst part begins, because do you know who had to take the decision about which participants would be eliminated ? The other members of the Unit. It was just terrible to watch as a viewer, you felt bad for everyone because none of the members wanted to choose, the mental pressure of this???? Especially taking into account there were kids in this. Afterwards they would eliminated a whole units, a lot of participants who were loved were eliminated so the producers decided to give them a chance to come back. The master had to choose five ex-participants that could return. Each of the revived members were added to one of the five remaining units and after their performance, they would face elimination. This time, the returning member could choose who they would face in the elimination. Once again, the burden of who would get eliminated was put on the members shoulders. These five boys came back for a second chance and were already forced to pick the member they thought was the weakest and they had to bear the burden of eventually removing that member from the team they were with, all along. Literally Echan had to choose to go against his bestfriend David (David totally understood but this moment was heartbreaking). Insoo chose to go against Sangmin who was the leader of the UNIT for elimination knowing that the members would choose Sangmin over him, he sacrificed his chance to comeback because he didn't want to break the team bond. The mental pressure they had on their shoulders and the guilt they must have felt after that? I don't even want to think about it. It's psychologically violent Yonghyun one of the participants (I'm not sure if he is still part of it but he was in Auspicious Crew) in the RAP mission even dissed MNET and the producers: "Those writers who wanted this fight. Even when the leaders change, justification doesn't change. Just keep being bossy like that" In the end, one of the UNITs "won", well just selected as "Team MVP" and they got some money to perform a bit and promote but it was nothing For the other part, the remaining boys had to do many concerts and when I say many, it's MANY : 260 Concerts. Imagine this??? It's crazy. It was even harder for the members of UNIT BLACK (this unit was formed with the results of the BOYS24 Semi Final during a live, Jiahn/Yeontae/Inpyo/Inho/Hyunuk who are in TEAM 3:00 were in this unit) Not only did these members had to follow an idol schedule due to their promotions for their song but they also had to perform during the concerts, and as a result, they got very little sleep. (i heard it was like only 2h of sleep?) The members were constantly injured and taken to the hospital. BOYS24 had a huge impact on the participants and not in a good way. Some had their dreams totally shattered. They abandoned the idea of becoming idols and debuting. Some candidates even the popular one ended up begging their fans not to vote for them because they couldn't handle all this shit anymore. Some debuted but at the end, their groups weren't that successful, others just do others things now (tattoo artist, dancers [like Hongin, you heard about him when you reacted to PLAY by CHUNGHA], actors [4 ex-contestant are in the drama THE HEAVENLY IDOL right now]). MNET often tries to erase this survival because they know very damm well what they did and they also often try to erase the ex-participants of BOYS24 when they come back in one of their survival especially PRODUCE. Example : Sunghyun having his part totally cut in the performance of GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS during PRODUCE X101 or the fact in the part where they were mentioning participants already idols, there were no mention of Sunghyun as a member of TEAM 3:00 [You don't see him on PEAK TIME here since he left the group after PRODUCE X101], other ex-participants had little screentime too. Taedong (in PRODUCE S2) and Sunghyun (in PRODUCE X101) ended up doing the RISING STAR [BOYS24 theme song] pose at the time of eliminations for a little reminder of BOYS24 existence to MNET. You have the start of everything now about TEAM 3:00 : They were anounced with 9 members but Sungho decided he didn't want to be part of it (i understand him, he saved his ass), at some point Jinseob left because of health problem (he had already problem during BOYS24), Sunghyun left after PRODUCE X101 and this is where he spilled the tea. He revealed that he had never once received any type of monetary earnings including any sort of contract payments. When he would ask for group promotion the agency would respond negatively saying they spend too much on BOYS24 to invest in them. He even asked solo promotion at least because his family had financial problem but they always denied him. He even revealed that at some point, th emembers had to pay for theirs outfits and hairs (dye/cut) by themselve. The members had to pay out of their own pocket for the hair styling that they needed for their schedules. They had no plan for them and Sunghyun also said the agency was blocking every single post that he wanted to post on social media to talk with the fans. When it was announced that he was leavin, he wrote a letter and he even wrote in it something like "it appears that debuting was more of a curse to us." After their contract ended, they became independant but it isn't simple to do musics like that. They were at least able to make a little fanmeeting for their fans, they try to communicate like they can (Isaac with Tiktok for example). The members ended up going to military following each others (minus Isaac who is Malaysian) and yeah they came back recently last years. They had such a hard time on BOYS24 and imagine getting nothing out of it at the end of everything, the agency not doing shit for you when you thought it would became a bit better (and it's not like their agency was a little one with no money, I don't give their name, but they had one problem with another artist I think and they ended up changing the name of the agency but still the reception with their groups is still bad, fans still complaining). The constant hardship they had to went through. I really hope they can shine at some point. -------------------------------------- PERFORMANCES OF GROUP WHO WERE ELIMINATED (and that Peak Time won't show, they don't even highlight or talk about those group even after elimination and EP2 so I will also put their name, hope it's okay for you) : JWIIVER covering DUNDUN by EVERGLOW https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vclZFICz_NY They debuted in 2022 so I think they were in the Rookie Section. Ryujei is the first starting (contestant of BOYS24), he is someone really good at ggs cover (but I don't think a EVERGLOW song suited him) and he was also back dancer for a girlsgroup BERRY GOOD. I don't know much about the others members. DAYDREAM covering PSYCHO by RED VELVET https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sISCtwP5vw I think they didn't debut for now, great vocal but I think they mostly got eliminated because when it's come to the dance, they didn't show a lot. AIMERS covering UGLY DANCE by ONF https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LMYCJFqkdI You can see a lot of mistakes but they deserve praise for going with UGLY DANCE because this song isn't easy at all. It's one of the hardest ONF song to perform I think because you need to put a lot of energy also Hyojin high note is so high, I would be so scared to do it honestly. Even ONF have some backtrack to relax a bit but here they do everything live, they even added an amazing dance break. (They were in the Rookie Section) ROMEO covering Juliette by SHINee https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QP0yUbi74TU They choose Juliette because their fandom name. I think they should have been on hold, they didn't do bad at all (They were in the Pause Section) WAO covering OVERDOSE by EXO https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MK6vO4xdH2o They should have choose another song....that's all I can say (Rookie Section I think. I know them because Knetz started mocking and shitting on their visual meanwhile international fans were defending them

Hii Jeff ! First of all I wanted to thank you for this reaction and your great insight as always, it's good to learn new things about the technical aspects or just how the industry works in general. But yeah, I think that youtube promotions are actually really important as you said, and I got to discover so many talented groups through Edward's (I'm pretty sure you were referring to him) channel so it's a bummer that some companies don't allow their groups on these types of channel were they could get more exposure at least. I know pretty much half of the groups here, or I'm familiar with them already I would say, and I was so excited to see them on the show so maybe they'll finally get the recognition they deserve. DKB is one of my favorite kpop group, music and personality wise ; you can see how passionate and serious these guys are over their career and I always enjoying watching them perform as much as they enjoy it themselves, so it feels really heartwarming to see other people enjoy it as well. I also wanted to say something about ATBO, I follow a lot of their content and to be honest I wouldn't say I was disappointed by their performance, but knowing what they're capable of I think they would've had more votes if they had chosen a stronger concept maybe ? But it's also nice seeing them do 'brighter' songs as well. Waaaw the part-time idols were so so good it made me emotional as well haha ; I kinda knew of them from the time they debuted but never really dived into their music and work, but seeing them here in this competition might be a sign for me to stan them ! Those type of show makes us realize that really only about 10% of groups who debuted actually becomes famous/recognized, that's how it works sadly and I hope all these groups will get their moment to shine someday too.

Eurone

I love the show more than Boy Planet, maybe because the focus more on the performance and professional critics than dramas. But yeah, I wish they would replay the performance of the reaction cut scenes, too. For ATBO performance of Growl, they has good vocal, rap and dancing but I think that I can understand the judge while they feel reluctant to press the button. I don't know why but I kind of feeling they lack of something, like they are not totally match with the vibe of the song. Wow for the part-time idols group, I respect them. That's the real inspiration. They just need a good song/ producer to help them fly higher.

Redclover

that part literally took me all the way out 🤣

Jana Bcles

I'm so happy you're watching peek time. There is some older groups I liked when they where active so it's amazing to see them here again. Tiffany in the panel of judges is Rachel in reborn rich she's a member of girl generation.

vega

Btw - quite a few of these groups have been on Edward Avila's channel hehe

dylightfullygeeky

Watching this for the first time with you and I paused just to say my jaw dropped at Kyuhyun's 2PM joke towards Jay Park 🤣 Didn't know it wasn't taboo anymore LOL (for bg Jay was a former 2PM member and probably the most popular one then but he got kicked out and that caused so much chaos in the kpop world 💀)

mac

yayy happy you're gonna check this out, i love the concept of this show and everyone is so talented, exctied to hear your thoughts!!

Ruu

yay so excited that you're checking out peak time! it's really so sad that so many hidden gems in kpop go unnoticed, i discovered so many talented groups here that i otherwise would have never heard of!

Chloe Chu

ohh i’m on vacation 2nd week of april til first week of may so i will think on that!

seth james

Btw - there's another survival show coming up called Fantasy Boy, think it comes out in April?
