For me, the idea of knowledge for knowledge's sake vs "practical" knowledge is interesting here. We know Sokka is intelligent, but Wan Shi Tong assumes he isn't because Sokka didn't have some rare literature on him and instead showed the owl a unique knot-tying technique. Wan Shi Tong doesn't seem to *use* knowledge (except when defending his own library, ironically) and can't see the difference between using it to commit genocide and take over the world and using it to protect the world. Sokka needs to learn how to shut up, though. Also, poor Appa!!!
