2022-10-16 00:06:37 +0000 UTCWhat I love with your reactions Neil is the fresh perspective from a (slightly) different culture. One thing I've observed over the years with British comedy is the level of cringe. It can be painful and sometimes you need to look away and not listen to some parts it's so cringeworthy, and I'm amazed how the writers can really torture their characters (and the audience) with some of the set ups, but then (very occasionally) get a satisfying emotional payoff like in this episode. It's so different to US sitcoms traditionally where the characters learn and grow and are "there for each other", UK sitcoms characters are often brutal to each other, and the comedy comes from just being stuck in the situation together. Like having a boss like Douglas, who you just have to put up with even though he's an arsehole and everything seems to always work out well for him.
