~~Chapter 38: The Peace before Calamity~~
.
âWhat do you think, Harry?â Dumbledore asked the boy as the two mages sat in the Headmasterâs office. Overlooking the Hogwarts grounds where Hagrid and a few others were working hard to set up the last of the defenses for the third task that was set for tomorrow.
Dumbledore had called the Innovator into his office to ask his views regarding something that they had found two days ago near the Black Lake, and an additional request regarding the safety of the champions.
The media hadn't been alerted yet, but the British and Bulgarian Ministry as well as the professors of the Durmstrang institute knew about the passing of their Highmaster.
Igor Karkaroff had been found dead in his office on the Durmstrang ship, and no one knew how that had happened. The dead body had been immediately portkeyed back to Bulgaria where it would drop it inside the ministry so that they could investigate the cause of his death. The students will be told about it once the Third Task is over, and then they will be sent back via the ship.
The Headmaster had been worried that it might be the work of Voldemort who was punishing Karkaroff for his treachery. Harry didnât want to believe it at first, but if it was true, then that meant Tom had someone else inside Hogwarts who might try to mess with them just because it would please the dark wanker.
âYou want me to overwatch the entire task?â Harry asked him. âYou do know that if Alan somehow wins then people might not take well to it? Theyâll assume that I had a birdâs eye view of the entire thing and that I helped my brother secure an easy victory.â
âAnd when have you cared about what others think, Harry?â The old man smiled. âThe Harry Potter I remember did what he wanted, he wasnât a people pleaser⌠or did that change?â
âYou know your words wonât affect me the way they affect others.â Harry shook his head. âAlso, I am still the same. I donât care what a man says unless he achieved something in the field he is talking about, but my brother does, and he has worked really hard for surviving this tournament, the accusations â no matter how false â would just blemish that.â
Dumbledore sighed, he didnât know what to say to that, he knew that the boy was telling the truth and it actually made his heart swell when he saw how Harry was supporting his brother for once. It had always pained him when he felt the animosity between the two Potters, and to see them finally getting together was heartwarming.
But the safety of champions was far more important than the brotherly bond, or the defamation that one might suffer at the hands of the general populace.
âWe will publicly scan you, your wand will be the only thing that you will have and it will only be pulled out at the time of specific need when you need to protect a champion. Of course, once you do that, the Champion will be immediately pulled out of the tournament.â The Headmaster nodded.
âBut my wand is all I need, sir,â Harry pointed out. âI already have the Hallows with me all the time, and a wizard only needs a wand to do the impossible.â
âHarryâŚâ The elder mage sighed. âIââ
âAlbus, if I may?â The Portrait of Armando Dippet spoke from behind him, and continued when Dumbledore nodded, âHarry, you have to understand that right now we are facing something called a âratâ. There is someone who is Voldemortâs spy, and we know that they will try to sabotage the task, their aim would of course be either you, or your brother. Are you getting my point?â
Harry nodded.
âMany great empires had come to an end because of a very small rat, Harry, and you or even Albus arenât that different. You two arenât infallible, and it would be better if you understood that now rather than later after accidentally committing a few mistakes that would scar you for life.â He pointed at Dumbledore who looked down in shame. âSo, all we ask of you is to just fly around as an extra pair of eyes, the champions would only have their wands with them; and once the task is over, you can easily step down and rejoin everyone else. Right, Albus?â
Dumbledore immediately took up from there. âIndeed. And you being present in the second task because you wanted the showballs to work perfectly is a pretty good excuse that could be used once more. No one would say anything against the owner taking the initiative to supervise that his product works throughout the task that it is being used to feature across the globe.â He ran a hand through his long beard. âSo, what do you say, Harry?â
The Apprentice of Death looked at the two men, one who sat in front of him and the other who was in the portrait, and then, with a resigned sigh, he nodded. âAlright, but I wonât keep on flying above the maze, sir, Iâll just be on stand-by, ready to arrive the moment something happened.â
â
âInvenire.â
âSomeone is waiting for you, Mr. Potter.â Marcus, his guardian portrait bowed, as the door to his suite opened and Harry stepped inside to find Daphne sitting in the living room sofa with a book on arithmancy in her hand.
âDaphne?â
The blonde goddess looked up, and her face instantly lit up like a Christmas tree as she placed the book on the reading table and sauntered to where he stood. She gave him a tight hug, relaxing almost immediately as his strong arms came to hold her.
âWhat happened, Daph?â He asked her, holding the girl close to his chest. âYou alright?â
She nodded, âI am, I âwell, thereâs something that I needed to tell you.â She hesitated a bit before going through with it, âIâŚ.mightâve created some problems for you.â She didnât dare look at him as she tried to muster her courage.
âWhat happened?â He asked her again, slowly releasing his hold on her waist as he tilted her face towards him.
âWell, Tracey was going all gaga over my âlove-lifeâ, and Tori said something about us not looking good together, I mean I knew she was just baiting me but when it comes to you, I somehow forget all the lessons dad taught us about politics and controlling ourselves.â She blushed, at the way his emerald pools sparkled when he heard that.
âSo, we had a verbal spat, and- and I donât know how but Tori said something about telling our parents, and I challenged her to do it, andâŚâ She sighed.
âAnd?â Harry repeated, âDid Astoria tell Lord and Lady Greengrass?â
â...promise me you wonât be angry?â Daphne gave him her best puppy-dog look, complete with the slightly protruded bottom lip and teary blue eyes.
âI wonât.â
âTori sent a letter to them, and that little squirt didnât even tell me about it! Can you believe that, Harry?â She looked in his eyes, trying to find some sort of reassurance which he did with another nod. âWell, I received a letter this morning, apparently mom and dad are coming to Hogwarts tonight. The school has arranged for champions to meet with their parents and mine, well⌠they wanted to meet you.â
Harry raised his eyebrow and asked her, âAnd youâre telling this to me now? Really, Daphne?â He sighed in exasperation. âYou know how important it is to meet your partnerâs parents, right? I would like to make a good impression on them.â
âThey love you already!â She held his face in her hands. âYou are the one guy that my dad likes. Remember when he was willing to sell Greengrass properties to sponsor you most? He even has news clippings of almost all your inventions in his study, and mom adores you like the son she never had. You donât have toââ
âBut this is different, Daphne,â Harry said, âLord Greengrass admires my mind as âThe Innovatorâ and we share profit, and Iâve only ever met Lady Greengrass in ministry balls. I donât think either one of us ever thought that one day â because of a certain stubborn beautiful girl â weâd end up calling each other family. It is a big deal, at least for me it is.â He nodded. âIâd not be meeting my benefactor but my possible father-in-law tonight and youâre only telling this now.â
Daphne looked down from his face, she couldnât even lean on him because it was him who she had mistakenly hurt. âSorry, Harry,â she mumbled, âI didnât know Tori would actually do that, we never spoke about it so I thought that she wouldâve left the topic alone and moved on from it. But you donât have to worry about it, Iâll tell them that you are too busy â you always are â so they wouldnât be able to-â
âNo!â He screamed, alarming her. âI- I mean, whatâs done is done right? And Iâd have to meet them one day anyway, so itâs better to get things done as soon as possible. Also, I donât think itâd be considered good if the guy who wished to become part of their family wouldnât even meet them when they came all the way just for that.â
âBut, I canâŚâ
âDonât worry.â He gently patted her back over her Hogwarts robes. âWe will meet them tonight, alright?â
The girl gave a small smile and nodded happily.
â
The wooden benches slowly started to fill as students, journalists, ministry officials and parents or guardians started to take their seats in front of the living maze that had been built after months of hard labor.
The walls of the maze were made of thick overgrowth of special plants that worked through magic, they were almost ten feet in height and moved on their own to further confuse the champions who stepped in it.
Adding further hurdles to the final task, several creatures of the dark â not too harmless, of course â had been strategically placed inside the maze around the Triwizard trophy to challenge the champions. The goal was to get to the trophy before others and to avoid as many obstacles as possible.
The champions had been given the evening to spend time with their family and close ones, after which they would be called out for a photoshoot before they were to meet all the important officials of different ministries, including Minister Fudge, who had decided to grace Hogwarts for the third task and cheer for their champions.
Surprisingly enough, the second in-command of Durmstrang who had been responsible for the students had taken Karkaroffâs place quite smoothly, and had told everyone that the Highmaster had been summoned by the Schoolâs board to resolve some really important issue. For some reason, the students hadnât even batted an eyelash to this and had played it as if they already knew this would happen someday.
Something about this seemed quite fishy to Harry, but at that moment he was a bit occupied with other things.
The boy was using this opportunity to stay as far away from the journalists or the ministry officials as he could. After all there was no real need to meet with them unless he needed something from them. In fact, if it was left to him then he would rather leave all of this to his P.A. Sirius, who did all the smooth talking, and partying with the officials, something that the Lord Black especially took pleasure in.
Harry was watching his godfather talk with the French External Affairs minister when all of a sudden he was turned forcefully by his shoulders, and a soft body slammed into him, engulfing him in a warm hug as his vision was covered in rich deep black locks that were carefully braided together in a delicate hairstyle and a sweet aroma of lavender wafted around him.
He looked down at the woman who was hugging him and gave a small smile. âGood evening, Lady Greengrass.â His hands came up to hug her back. âYou are as gorgeous as always.â
The woman got a tint of red on her cheeks as she hugged him tightly for another second before releasing him, holding his arms in a tight grip. âHow many times do I have to tell you to call me by my name, Harry?â She frowned, even though he could easily see her beautiful smile. âYou donât think of me as a stranger, do you?â
âNot at all, but I think calling you by your name would be rude.â
âYou are practically like my son!â She said, exasperatedly. âNot by blood, of course, but does that really matter? That means you can call me by my name, okay? We have known each other for like, what, almost five years now? What will I have to do to get you to agree to the one thing I want?â
âHmmmâŚâ He made a faux thinking pose before smiling. âHow about another batch of your wonderful chocolate cookies? I loved those fruit & nut ones as well.â
âFor that you will have to visit us again, Mr. Potter.â She narrowed her eyes. âI have invited you so many times, and all I received was a polite decline because you were too busy. You know I had half a mind to come to Hogwarts and pull you away during the yule, but then Daphne â oh shit!â Her eyes widened and she looked back hurriedly.
âThere you are!â
Lord Cygnus Greengrass was walking towards them with both of his daughters in tow; Daphne was a few steps behind him, exasperatedly looking at her mother who was blushing sheepishly while Astoria was pouting.
âLord Greengrass.â Harry dipped his head in respect, and he smiled when he received the same from the elder man.
âYou know, one of these days I wouldnât stop Anastasia from coming to Hogwarts, and strangling you till you agreed to call us by our names like we want you to.â They chuckled and shook hands while Daphne went for her mom who was standing beside Harry.
âHello, sweet mother of mine.â
âDaphââ
âYour daughters are completely fine, you did well in rushing off to find Harry as if he was about to disappear in the next moment,â the Greengrass heiress jibed. âI am so thrilled to learn that my mother would forget her own daughtersââ
âAnd her husband, donât forget me,â Cygnus piped in, consciously ignoring his wifeâs glare.
â âand her husband so easily when she meets someone that she considers her son.â She gave a tight smile. âIt truly warms my heart.â
âOh, câmon!â Anastasia huffed. âI was just missing him too much, and itâs not like you three were lost. I knew you were right behind me.â
âObviously.â
âWhat was that, Toria?â
The youngest of the Greengrasses feverishly shook her head. âNothing at all, mom. I was just talking to myself.â
âTalk softly, dear. Sometimes it seems like you are being sarcastic with your mother.â
âReally? I would neverââ
âAlright! Alright!â Cygnus interrupted the two with a wave of his hand as Daphne left his side and went towards her boyfriend, quickly hooking her arm in the crook of his elbow. âNow, we were invited for a specific reason, right, lad? What is this I am hearing about you still not telling my daughters about our permission to court Daphne?â
Before Harry could have replied, Daphne chose the moment to interrupt them, âYou what now?!â She asked, surprised and turned to the boy. âYou had their permission?â
âI did.â He smiled. âYou really think I wouldnât tell the two people who are almost my family about my wishes regarding their daughter?â
âBut- butâŚâ She looked at her mom, who was smirking proudly, âYour letter said something about being âastonishedâ and what not. Why?â
âThat would be Harryâs doing,â Anastasia replied, giggling. âWhen Toriaâs letter came, we sent one to Harry, asking as to why he hadnât told either of you about it. He said he forgot about it, but that gave him a good opportunity to play a small prank on the two of you.â She looked at Cygnus. âAnd we were all too happy to be on board.â
âSoâŚall thisâŚâ Daphne murmured. âYou were pranking me?! Do you know how stressed out I was throughout the day? I even fought with that useless brat!â She pointed at Astoria and they ignored her indignant âHEY!â.
âIt was quite funny to watch you walk around the suite muttering curses and threats, Lady Greengrass had even asked for my memory regarding that.â He laughed. âTake it as my attempt to level the grounds for all those times you pulled me into classrooms.â
âThat- that wasnâtââ
âYou pulled him into abandoned classrooms?â Anastasia asked her daughter. âIs this how we raised you, Daphne? Pulling the poor boy like he was some toy of yours.â
âHe wouldnât meet with me, mom,â Daphne glowered. âAlways in his books or his room, this one. I had to find ways to get him to talk to me.â She shrugged. âYou were a real menace, you know. I donât think any girl would go that far for her boyfriend.â
Harry just smiled, his arm smoothly went behind her as he held her waist. âI am glad you did, you are one of the best things to happen to me,â he whispered in her ear, his green eyes glowing with emotions as he leaned in to kiss her cheek.
And just like that, all of Daphneâs anger evaporated instantly. The girl blushed when she heard her mother coo as her dad laughed loudly while her sister smiled at them.
This was perfect, and she could readily imagine herself living happily like this for the rest of her life.
â
Harry was working with the large white screen that would show them the champions as they went about their tasks, turning the specific runes that would switch it on and connect it to the Showballs, he had already tagged the four champions and the timer for the change in screen time had been set to two minutes since the third task didnât have a particular time duration.
The white screen lit up immediately and the first thing that came to view was the photographs from the Triwizard ceremony that had been held a few minutes ago where the judges had finally revealed the luminescent blue glass trophy that would be placed with the school that won the Tournament.
After that, the judges, various officials from the different ministries around the world and lastly, the four champions stood around the trophy for a small photo-session. Then, they had been called for another small talk with the officials before the task would start.
âHarry?â
The boy turned to look at his younger brother who â with months of rigorous training â had lost some of his baby fat and looked more like Harry than he had ever before. Still, the boyâs red hair, and chocolate brown eyes as well as the smattering of freckles around his nose and cheeks were distinguishing enough for the two to be recognised separately.
Harry had even used his âEye-cureâ potion on Alan after the second task that had worked well since the boy didnât need his glasses anymore, and the infamous lightning bolt scar on his forehead had reduced to a small jagged line after months of healing.
âYes, Alan?â He released his wand that went inside the holster as he neared the boy. âProblems?â
âNone.â The boy-who-lived shook his head in negative, âIâ wellâŚtoday each of the champions met their families, and⌠well, I did meet the Weasleys, they are kinda my family as they have looked after me ever since⌠well, you know what.â The boy sighed. âBut theyâre not my family. I mean, they are, but they arenât, you know? What I am trying to say is that I justââ
âI know.â The Innovator nodded. âCome, walk with me.â He turned back in a random direction, one that was opposite to the public and the lapping wolves that made up the ministers of magical governments.
The two Potters walked in silence for some time, neither saying anything to break the comfortable peace that had settled between them, content to enjoy the chirping of cicadas and the aroma of wet soil that wafted around them. They could sometimes hear the strange cries of beasts that infested the maze, but Alan was confident enough in his skills that he could face any single one of them.
âDo you think mom would have supported me?â Alan asked him, breaking the silence as they stopped at a point which overlooked the forbidden forest. âMy name in the Tournament, and then⌠Well, all that has happened in the last few years. You think mom would have agreed to it? What about grandma?â
Harry nodded. âMom loved us more than anything in the world, Alan. She would have not only supported us but also fought off anyone else who would have dared to badmouth you, same goes for our grandma Rea. You were the apple of her eyes, sometimes I thought she loved you more than me, but then later I realized that she just knew I would one day understand why. And I did, even though it took me some time.â
âWhy?â
âBecause you, my brother, are the youngest of us all.â He smiled. âThe youngest, and therefore the one who is supposed to have a childhood free from the terrors that they had suffered due to the war. I wasnât much older back then, so I donât know either. Hell, I barely remember grandpa and dad, but I do remember mom and grandma talking about them. How brave they were, and how they fought off Voldemort and the Death Eaters.â
âButââ
âAnd they loved me the same, they didnât differentiate between us.â Harry nodded. âYet, they knew that one day I would have to be the elder Potter, the one who will be taking care of our family, the one who will have to make sure that our future remains bright and our family is safe from all the harm and danger.â He added, âWhat neither of us knew was that the time might come so soon.â
They were silent again, each of them lost in their memories as they remembered their mother and grandma. Their smiles, the way they would laugh when either of the male Potters did something stupid, their motherâs lullabies that she sang them to sleep and their grandmaâs bedtime stories that were sometimes funny and sometimes taught them valuable lessons regarding their family as well as life.
âWhat did she look like?â The youngest whispered, his eyes a bit misty from the avalanche of emotions. âOn her last day in that tower⌠How did our mother look?â
Harry didnât even have to think about his answer to that particular question. He had thought about it for years himself, replaying their last moments together repeatedly in his head as he tried to feel his motherâs presence a moment longer than he had been allowed by Death. He looked up at the clear night sky, sprinkled with the twinkling stars that shone brightly above them. The large round slightly golden moon with a reddish tinge around it, beautifully bathing them in its soft merciful glow.
âBeautiful,â he said quietly, âDelicate, but so strong; protective and one of the fiercest warriors that I have ever seen.â He smiled in remembrance. âStill, she looked at me with nothing but love and adoration, so much that it would fill this desolate earth with enough affection to last a millennia or two.â His eyes grew warm as tears started to fill in the emerald pools. âThe best mother we couldâve ever had. She deserved so much better than what she got.â
âYou think she is happy where she is right now?â
Harry smiled again, and despite the tears that were blurring his vision, he could clearly see her smile at them from the Realm of Death where he had last heard her voice. No matter what the artelean commander, Dramox, said about it being a hoax, he knew that it was his mom and she was talking to him, he knew that she was watching them right now.
âShe is.â He nodded. âAnd she is watching us from where she is, probably cheering for us to conquer all of our battles that lay ahead in our lives before joining her once we are old enough to leave.â
Alan nodded, tears streamed down his face as he followed his brother in looking up at the starry sky, imaging his mother among one of the many twinkling ones. Wishing that she was here in person but knowing that she would always be there with them, no matter what happened.
Why? Because she was their mother. The one woman who loved them the most.
â
Dark lavender eyes with flecks of gray in them flashed in merriment as their owner watched the masked men leave the room, each of them rushing out of the place to accomplish the task that they had been entrusted with by the Dark Lord. The woman smiled once more, flashing her multicolored rotting teeth that blemished her once beautiful face.
She opened the door to her masterâs throne room, trying and failing miserably to control her giddiness at finally being able to live the day that she had been working for the last two decades. She bowed deeply in front of her Lord, the one man who had opened her eyes to the true wonders of the power that resided within herself.
âMy Lord,â she whispered, afraid that speaking even a bit loud would be too much for her masterâs sensitive hearing. âEverything is ready, I have told them to do exactly as you had commanded and they will be ready to leave within ten minutes. All of them are just waiting for you to take command of the forces.â
âBella, my most loyalâŚâ The Dark Lord hissed. âI am quite glad that you have been with me through all this. It would have taken me much more than one year if it had not been for you.â His voice was raspy, as if he was speaking after screaming for hours.
âI live to serve, my Lord.â She smiled, and looked up to show her limitless dedication and devotion to him but stopped when she saw his face, or more like the hideously carved⌠thing that was in the place of his face. âMa- Master? Are⌠are you alright?â
Instead of the crimson orbs that shone in the unwelcoming darkness of the hall, the Dark Lord looked down at her with charcoal black eyes that glinted with pure unadulterated malice. A small white dot shifted around the perpetual blackness to represent the location of his pupil, as he raised his shriveled hand and rubbed it on his sickly white bald head that now sprouted a web of thick black veins around it.
There were scars on his head, as if someone had ripped small parts of the skin off from that place, and then there was his entire appearance that looked dried and blackened and old, as if someone had sucked all of his blood from him along with his life.
âI am absolutely fine, Bella,â he whispered in the same raspy tone, which she now recognised to be different from how he usually called her. âBut you see, there is a slight change in our plans,â he muttered, and stood up from his throne, thin long fingers wrapping around his wand as he descended down the stairs.
âChange of plans, master?â She questioned, momentarily forgetting that her master was behaving way differently. âButââ
âWe have to do it, Bella, we have to,â he interrupted her, wincing a bit when he felt the half piece of soul chitter in the back of his mind. âWe will need to change things, or we wonât succeed tonight, or do you think yourself to be better than me?!â
She bowed deeply and shook her head. âNo- Not at all, master. You are the greatest one, and I am but a humble servant for you. Whatever you say will be done immediately.â
âGood.â He smiled, a grotesque stretching of blackened chapped lips that resembled more like a grimace. âThen, I want you to make sure that tonight, our attack is in three phases; First one will be the same as before â our entire army will be attacking Hogwarts tonight.â
The woman nodded, relieved that she didnât have to summon everyone once more. It wasnât that she couldnât do it, it was just that doing so would have been quite a hassle, especially when she had already told them to assemble in the next ten minutes.
âBut, instead of me, I want you to lead the attack tonight,â he told her, and gave a dirty grin when he saw her shocked face. âBecause I shall wait for my guests to arrive here, which will initiate the second phase of the plan.â
Bellatrix frowned at that, according to the previous one there was only Alandale Potter who was supposed to arrive here, but her Master clearly said âguestsâ.
âGuests⌠Master?â She asked. âI thoughtââ
âBellaâŚâ Voldemort said, in that same raspy tone that made her tremble in fear. âIt has to be guestsâŚ. we need both of them here, and I hope that you will not fail me tonight; by the time I am done here, I want half of Hogwarts decimated and sent to the Realm of Death. Soon, the Ministry will follow after that, and then, all of Magical Britain will be under my control.â
The demented witch bobbed her head, taking in the new orders as if her life depended on it. She clenched her fists as she tried to remember the prominent wizards that would stand in her way at Hogwarts.
âDumbledore has grown old and would easily get tired. You just need to keep him busy enough with the giants and a few different beasts that would rampage through the castleâs gates,â he whispered, âThe problem is Harry PotterâŚ.â He growled, an undercurrent of anger lacing his words. âDuring our attack on Hogsmeade, it wasnât the old fool who had defeated me. No, I was merely toying with him; tiring him enough so that he could watch the decimation of his beloved school through his own eyes before I would kill him later.â
Bellatrix remembered that attack as if it had happened only yesterday, she remembered how her Master had been enjoying the battle. He was laughing! Mocking the older mage as if the battle was nothing but a mere toy for him to indulge with till he got bored and broke it.
Then, she remembered the boy who had arrived suddenly, flying in the air without any support, and then things had taken a turn for the worse as that single boy had changed the tides of the battlefield which had ended with their Lord battered in a pit before he had to flee.
âIt's the boy who is responsible for our loss that day, and so, I have decided that rather than fight him and Dumbledore together, I would personally kill the Potter boys here and take their bodies with me to show the sheep that were hoping for their saviorâs return.â He grinned once more, and looked down at his shriveled hand. âThis time, I have a special surprise for the eldest Potter, someone that he wouldnât be able to defeat.â
The witch didnât know who or what it was, or even why her Lord was assured of his victory against a monster like Harry Potter. Still, she knew that it wasnât her place to question her master, no. Her job, as his most faithful, was to do his bidding without questioning anything.
And that is what she planned to do as she bowed her head to the Dark Lord. âI live to serve, my Lord.â
With that she turned around and left the Dark Lord in the hall as she moved towards the courtyard where the forces had started to assemble.
It was finally time to harvest the sweet fruits of their laborâŚ.
And everyone who had opposed them in the past and present shall pay for their transgressions in blood.
