VR Test - Foxy

EDIT #2 (IMPORTANT): after trying a handful of potential fixes, it seems that the video is still not working right. while i'm not gonna give up on figuring it out, i will set this aside for a later time when i've got some more time to spare on it. apologies for the technical issues, hopefully i'll be able to get this working soon enough!

a bit of a random thing to share, but i thought i might as well since it's taking up QUITE a bit of space on my hard drive.

given how it was brought up a while back, i thought it'd be neat to try doing a VR render of a preexisting animation (specifically one that was more or less animated with a first-person POV in mind), so i set this to render as i caught up on some much-needed sleep last night. it's hard to say how my work will really look in VR (given the framerate and such), but hopefully it didn't turn out HORRIBLY janky.

please do note, i haven't actually tested this out to see how it looks in VR, (as i do not currently have a functional VR headset) so just a fair warning - i have absolutely no idea how this is gonna look in VR. the animation was not really made with this exact perspective in mind so some stuff might be off. as the title states, this was mainly a test more than anything else.

either way, feel free to let me know how this looks for those of you who have VR. if it seems like something that people like, i wouldn't be opposed to doing it occasionally for animations that it'd work for!

and some updated credits, since this is using Shiba's updated audio of the animation

that's incredibly helpful actually, thank you so much for taking the time to do that! i did have a feeling that the resolution was higher than it ought to be - but i just figured that was necessary for the SBS stuff. in that case, i might try doing the same and seeing how that turns out when i have some time to do so. as for the bitrate, i usually aim for 60 or something around that (in premiere pro), though as what the actual number is, im pretty clueless about - so that's very good to know

Well I can provide a bit of feedback there, 10240x2560 is a bit much, I don't know anyone doing VR animations rendering at that size. Most headsets don't get anywhere near that. The Valve Index (what I have) for example renders at 2016x2240 per eye, and the Quest 3 renders at 2064x2208, so going significantly higher than double that width is overkill. Furromantic (probly the biggest name in furry VR animations right now) renders their stuff at '4K' (3840x1920) and '8K' (7680x3840), both with a bitrate of ~50,000 at 60fps, and it seems to work pretty good. By comparison the bitrate of this animation is 185,861, which is pretty crazy. At the 24fps your videos run at, you could drop that to 25,000 bitrate easy. I went ahead and dropped this video into a video editor and re-saved it at 7680x3840 with 25,000 bitrate and it's working great now. And as a bonus it now only takes up 119MB of disk space instead of the 864MB it used to. Hope that helps.

I think it might have rendered monoscopic. I tried SBS and reverse-SBS and saw no difference. I did test a few other videos I had which were 3d renders and they played out fine, so not sure what's going on

EDracon

wait it does? well i'm glad to hear that it works at least. as for the 3D effect - i was using a premade camera setup that was made for SBS VR display - so as for why it might not be displaying any 3D effect, i've honestly got no idea. it may be something that i've got in the blender project itself that could be messing up the perspective or something. i think what i may do moving forward with any sort of VR experiments like this is build a short, simple scene from the bottom up with VR in mind and see if it works better. thanks for letting me know though, every bit of feedback is helpful :]

turborenegade

So, this does work, but there doesn't seem to be a 3D effect. Possible that you didn't render the cameras far enough apart?

EDracon

No worries. Sometimes things just don't want to work. Just glad I could help test.

boombome

Don't worry man! This is experimental territory after all! Take your time, I know you're going hard on multiple projects. And apologies that I couldn't help you more with the troubleshooting.

WayveMayker

that's a shame :\ im at a loss as to what went wrong with the video then - i'll try to look into it more when i have some time to spare. thanks for giving it a shot though, appreciate the feedback! apologies it's not working right

turborenegade

Tried to give it a go, while i can hear it, there is no video. Attempted in both VR using Virtual Desktop and VLC player.

boombome

hmm odd. i'll go and see if i screwed something up when exporting it in premiere in a little bit

turborenegade

ok so i tried playing it on both my pc and laptop and both gave me an encoding error and would only play the audio (specifically saying the encoding settings arent supported)

Literally Your Mom

Fair nuff, I’ll give it a look on my pc

Literally Your Mom

noted, it's fairly difficult to preview on my end so i'm not sure how smooth the playback is in general. dragging and dropping it into my browser does seems to play it back at the normal framerate, so it might just be a hardware/software thing due to the ridiculously high resolution (it's like 10240x2560 since it's two 4k frames combined into one very wide image)

turborenegade

I mean I don’t have a vr headset either but to me the frame rate on this is extremely low, it’s like one frame every so often

Literally Your Mom

also, meant to say this in the post - but progress is still going well on the current animation. should be able to get something regarding that out to you guys either tonight or tomorrow morning.
