On the last night of summer, when the devil’s flowers bloom and glow, The Great Night wanders the cooling earth. Those who gift offerings to her are bestowed with The Great Night’s protection from bad omens and great misfortunes until the next summer. In some folktale variations, The Great Night’s blessings come with a twist that may cause the daughters of the protected households to become as fat as her.
