Yea, I understand your issues with the film but if you put it in historical context this was as good as it got for family friendly movies in the early 80s. Studios started dumping most of their money into action films except Disney. This came out about 5 months before I was born. I grew up on it. Spielberg has been one of my favorites my whole life with movies like this, Jaws, Hook, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, Indiana Jones and a great many other movies as well as Shows like Band of Brothers (Very short show u must get to). ET dressed like a woman gets me every time :) :). More Spielberg please. The Terminal starring Tom Hanks is a must see. You would love it. Definite Cast Away vibes. Anyway, thanks for this amazing nostalgia.

Depends on what copy you watch. The 20th year anniversary had the walkie talkies. You are correct that he later regretted doing it. I haven't watched the reaction yet. I just assumes incorrectly that it would be the more current version.

And today, brands like M&Ms would've paid through the nose for that kinda product-placement.

I believe this was the unedited version as the one with the guns edited out also had térrørïst replaced. I am pretty sure I heard them say that and saw guns during the kid chase scenes. Spielberg undid the edit because he regretted making the change basically as soon as he did it.

In my child mind the “government” was the villain. And idk how all these years I missed that it was a vivisection 😖 I’m glad we are no longer in the 80s and most critters get the metaphorical axe before dissection.

M&M’s candy people wanted to be paid for use of their product so they used Reese’s Pieces instead, which wasn’t yet a huge brand.

Brought back so many memories. Thank you for this.
I think Jim Hensen of the Muppets helped create the ET character. No CGI, just puppetry and mechanics, which makes the walking/running scenes both awkward and endearing.
The little girl is Drew Barrymore, who grew up in an acting family and was exposed to drugs and alcohol before she was even a teenager. She actually broke her addiction with the help of the musician David Crosby, who acted as a foster parent after Drew came out of rehab. Imagine having parents so irresponsible that the person you turn to as a responsible father figure is a recovered addict with two liver transplants. She has said he saved her life.
Henry Thomas (Elliot) brought Spielberg to tears with his audition, because the kid was able to believably cry without prep.
One thing I love about this film is that there are no villains, unless you count the teacher making those children perform vivisection on frogs. Having to slice open a living animal broke my heart when I was a kid, and turned me off from the sciences for years.
Thanks for freeing the frogs, Elliot. 😊

Spielberg uses the shadow kid on the bike over a giant moon as the logo for his production company (Amblin?) so that's why you've seen that before. For friendly aliens - wasn't Superman a friendly alien? The Iron Giant? Klaatu? Robbie the Robot was sort of a friendly alien except that he was a robot and he didn't come here, we went there. Anyway, there have been a few. If you want a more adult POV with a very similar plot, there's "Starman" with Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen. That was a 1984 friendly-alien-phone-home with grownups (and a nice Ford Mustang Cobra II). I rewatched it recently, and it held up better than I thought it would.

Elliot being sick is due to ET. Remember the scene when he was in class and started to look drunk at the same time ET was? When ET ran into the cabinets, Elliot also touched his face/head like it hurt. ET was likely sick because of being on Earth too long.

Elliot also introduced ET to Star Wars action figures/characters when they were in his room. The universes are linked. Star Wars was everywhere in the early 80's.

Fun Fact...kinda: U.S. Box Office sales for Star Wars '77 and E.T. '82 earned them the #1 and 2 spots (all-time) for 20/15 years respectively. The likes of which we'll likely never see again. (Gone With The Wind/Snow White and the Seven Dwarves held the spots for 3 decades albeit with less competition)

Alright I hope your sitting down. ET and Star Wars are in the same universe. ET can use the force. the force can heal wounds, move objects and oddly link ones mind and body with another to better communicate which is why the dog didn't attack ET since also the force has the ability to control minds whether that's lesser life forms or animals. ET immediately rushed towards the child in the Yoda costume because he knows of master Yoda and this is further proven when ET's species is present during Star Wars Episode 1 The Phantom Menace during the senate hearing at the vote of no confidence scene. As of right now i cant say its canon since Disney bought star wars but there are comics before the buy out that explain why earth has humans that are backwater ignorant and how Chewbacca was once mistaken as bigfoot.
Further more in my opinion ET cant survive on earth's atmosphere for too long so he used a Force trick to link up his wellbeing to Elliot but also knew it would hurt Elliot in order to prolong his own life hoping for rescue to return soon. When ET became really sick he detached himself from Elliot's lifeforce out of his own morality because he didn't want to hurt Elliot any more. Now think of this when ET regained life it was when his people were close which means others of his kind linked themselves to him in order to keep him alive and ready to be rescued. When ET asked Elliot to come with him my thoughts was because ET felt bad that he had to use his lifeforce to keep himself alive or just thinking positive maybe Elliot was force sensitive because ET could link up with his lifeforce and therefore be a potential jedi that ET could bring to the council.
I'm just rambling because i saw a video or two on this subject after noticing ET's kind were in star wars and needed answers.

Amazing film sir! Great reaction
The actress playing the mother is actually 34 years old and the oldest son is 16 so it’s reasonable that she’s the mum, she would have had him at 18

There's a browser plugin called "Audio Channel". I use the compression/limiter in compression mode. Basiclally it compresses the volume of the sound and turns it up a bit with the right settings. It levels out the volume. (my settings: TH -20, Att 0, Rel 0.25, Ratio 3 and knee 10). The compressor will lower the volume on anything above the threshold DB by the ratio. So everything above -20dB will be lowered by a factor of 3 on my settings. Afterwords you put the volume higher and everything's that's too quiet will be louder.

Children smoking was never *publiclly* acceptable in this time period in the United States, this isn't France. However, at the time it was Very popular with kids who wanted to look 'cool' or 'sophisticated' and/or 'mature'... a side-effect of all the branding and advertising of tobacco products at the time.
And I don't think the 'Whipit' t-shirt means what you think it means. Probably promotional material for Devo whose song, 'Whip-It', was very popular at the time.

Mr L, in reference to E.T., one of the biggest movies in history... "So we can probably forecast that this is a somewhat large movie based off of a John Williams Scoring." is exactly why I subscribed 3 years ago.
