Lore of Heroes #1 - Comet City

Hello there, Lucyfar here. I know it's been awhile since I posted but instead of posting monthly or weekly about X number of renders being made or Y number of words being written I thought it would be a better idea to just talk about the game itself, specifically the story and the world building without spoilers of course. I feel like just reporting about numbers is a little boring? Am I crazy? So I'm going to start posting about stuff you will find and learn in-game but with a little more depth here because I hate expositive dialogue and the less I need to use this narrative tool the better. I always hated when a character starts asking people questions about their world THAT THEY KNOW THE ANSWER just so that the other character can explain it to the audience. But even tho this is and always will be weird to me, sometimes you have no choice, but anyway lets move on and talk about one of the very things the players will be in contact with.

Comet City

I consider the city to be a character in and itself, it's a very unique place and the reason is because the game takes place in a alternative version of our world, I'm using the name "Terra" for the planet instead of "Earth" because it sounds fancier and it's literally the portuguese name of our planet. Comet City is part of a country of our real world that I'm not going to reveal now because it's not relevant for the story at the moment. The same thing for the origin of powers, the story isn't about how humans got it but how they evolved with it. I'm taking a page from Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead, in which the origin of the zombie virus isn't relevant because we are focused on watching the survival of Rick Grimes and his group, it's about the characters. And Empire of Heroes is also about the characters, the powers are something the world has grown used to it, and sometimes even complacent because of it.

For example in this world you can buy something on the internet and have it delivered in front of your door 5 to 10 minutes after your payment was confirmed because they have speedsters working on the delivery company, and so on. How people deal with losing their property when a hero and a villain start a fight in the middle of the city, or a kaiju appears and starts destroying everything? Insurance companies have new strategies to profit from power related incidents, and so on. There's a lot of different examples I could give but that's enough for now. Society has evolved in a way that's not very easy to describe, and the fact I'm horrible at explaining things that are inside my head doesn't help, but it's a fun exercise to imagine the many different things we could have had if we had powers in our world.

"When everyone is super no one is", is this quote from Syndrome (The Incredibles) really true? Or is it that some people have way more power than others and at the end of the day there will always be a winner and a loser? What if I have the power to fly and shoot lasers from my eyes but my neighbor has the power to turn into a chair? We both have powers, right? But his are very situational and not very strong, sometimes shit like that happens and that can cause frustration to some, while others with way better powers don't understand what it means to be born with a weak or boring power.

But, what if my power cause a mutation in my body? Say, it makes my skin turn green and scales to grow? I'm more resistant to physical damage but now I look like a lizard. And if one thing history has taught us is that humans are afraid of what is different, it causes fear and fears turns to prejudice. Those humans with powers that cause body mutations are called Mutants, and they are not okay. They are usually segregated by society and the ones with very extreme mutations can't live normally so they hide in the sewers. While others are sexualized because they have cat ears, bunny tails or red skin and horns like a demon. It's tough being a mutant in this world. It's very easy to become a villain when you are born a mutant in this world. So you see, this looks like a utopia but it's actually a very fucked up world. And the worst part of it all is that your character (the main character) was born without any powers, and with that comes a lot of new problems and situations. I like conflict, I like when things are not easy for the protagonist, it creates more tension and drama, and it usually creates a more interesting story to be watched/experienced.

That's it for now, in the next post I'll talk about The Seven Warlocks, the mafia bosses of each district of Comet City.

Until the next time, cya.
