Oh, I misunderstood. I thought the doctor was saying he had to choose one or the other. I see now that he said he could save the child or lose them both. A co-worker of mine went through something like this a few years ago. The child survived, but the mom didn't make it. Very sad day when we all found out. This scene is one of the reasons I said this show is hard to watch.

Back in those times there wouldn't have been any way to save her, either they don't do anything and her and the baby both die (even in modern times if a baby is stuck and nothing is done the mother would die) or they cut her open like they did to save the baby resulting in her dying from blood loss because they just didn't have the knowledge that we do now.
