Super 8 is a motion-picture film format released in the late 60’s. The cameras they were using used that type of film. Nowadays with Smart Phones so common these types of cameras are basically obsolete. Super 8 was most widely used for filming home movies.

Just got done watching this one, so happy you enjoyed it as much as I do! The one obvious inspiration for this film was E.T. in addition to the others you mentioned. I just love the mix of nostalgia, comedy, mystery, action…all with an emotional backdrop and a fantastic score.
My favorite part of this film surprisingly is the short montage towards the beginning of the movie where Joe is painting the models in his room before getting the message on the walkie. Giacchino’s tender score, the shots of comic book/superhero figurines, the radio talk show voiceover, and the paint jars…this was all pulled straight from my childhood and it makes me feel emotional every time!
Also, I’m sure you already figured out that Super 8 is a reference to the film format used to make movies back in the day.
