Tywin wants nothing more than to extend his legacy. Right now his only option to do that is Jamie. Cersi's kids would never have the last name Lannister and I doubt Tywin would recognize Tyrion's kids (maybe if they had been with Sansa). So I feel like he took this opportunity to try to get Jamie to leave the Kingsguard. Even if it had played out that way I think Tywin would've had Tyrion murdered on the way to the wall.

Re-watching these episodes are so exciting. I now realize that just one sentence that Tywin uttered during that small council meeting will have a huge affect on the rest of the season. I'll be able to talk about it later.
