Daniel Day Lewis is a true artist. He lets the characters he plays totally consume him. He has retired from acting entirely since his last film The Phantom Thread. Likely not a film for you Dan, but I watched it recently on Netflix and he was outstanding as always. My opinion is that the character he played was so much like him in real life that it held a mirror up to his face and now he can't do it anymore. Getting lost in your art and an unreachable perfection that you alone hold yourself to.

The first actor to play Eli got fired because he was too intimidated by Daniel Day Lewis performance. DDL is a character actor who stays in character throughout the entire filmmaking process.
