In the books, they had a lot more physical injuries/trauma from the games. Katniss became deaf in one ear after blowing up the Career pack's food in the first games, and wearing a hearing aid the rest of the books. And Peeta actually has his leg that was injured in the first book amputated. He has a metal and plastic prosthetic in the rest of the books that slow him down a lot. I always thought it was strange that they took that out of the movies.
