VIDEO REWARD: Paint Process

Here's my first ever paint process video! It's the first ever mostly because this was the first time I actually remembered to hit record while I worked, ahaha... ha. I think it's at about 14x speed -- I tried to find that sweet spot of not so fast that it's just a blur of what I'm doing, and not so slow that you have to agonize with me as I struggle to figure out Dick Grayson's facial structure.

Since this was made just for my Patreons, I put on a bunch of music I like that fits the mood of the painting-- unfortunately this means YouTube has blocked it in some countries. If you're in one of those countries, I sincerely apologize that you can't just stream it here, however the same video will be uploaded to August's Dropbox rewards folder, so you can view or download it from there!

Some final comments on this video which is (and I calculated) about 8 hours of work condensed into 30 minutes: I'm sorry it's so dark, but that's exactly as dark as I worked on because I am a fool who has been hyperfixated on subjects in shadow and low lighting scenarios when the human eye begins to lose the ability to see color. (Why, Kira. Why.)

Hilariously, you can kinda see the timestamp in the bottom right corner, and you'll notice I only worked on this painting between 7pm and 11pm because it was impossible to work on during daytime hours when the ambient sunlight in my apartment was stronger than my tablet's screen light. (....That probably should have been my first warning that my paints were too dark........)

If you see weird flashes of Burce's face in there, that's just me tabbing over to it to color pick from it. Not trying to incept anything, I promise.

I also sincerely apologize for the amount of times I accidentally flip the canvas vertically rather than horizontally. That is never intentional. My click-accuracy is just atrocious.

Finally, if you have any questions at all (like, "Woah what was that thing you did at 12:xx" or anything), please don't hesitate to leave me a comment with it! My painting process is organized chaos, but I'm super happy to break it down if anyone's interested!

Oh my GOODNESS this is so so cool!! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ Thank you so much for checking and sharing- I had no idea colors could be that playful in the same way! Wow. Color Relativity magic!! (excited to read more on that!) And thank you so much for your mid-tone notes too! Will definitely be playing with mid-tones much more! ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿ‘น๐Ÿ–ค

2) In re: the color dot (which I sometimes put out to the side, in case I ever paint over my original midtone value completely and am like 'damnit, wish I still had that color' ahaha). My guess was that it was the exact same color, but I took screenshots to make sure, and used the color picker to double check: and it is the EXACT same color. The reason it looks so different is my beloved phenomenon of COLOR RELATIVITY, which is how a color in relation to surrounding colors can look so, so different! ^^ At 15:45, I'm using a solid background that is darker than the magenta/blue light background, to make the skin values *appear* lighter, so I can see them a bit better, without actually changing the value information. I super encourage you to play around with two or more colors, changing one color at a time to see how it affects the appearance of the colors next to it! IT'S SO COOL and one of my favorite things about coloring! :D I'm also going to post an art tidbit about color relativity that might be helpful for you!

Those are some great questions!! Let me answer them in order: 1) You're right! I always start from a midtone value, and work my way backwards to shadows, and forewards to lighter values. ^^ I've found that with the way I blend using brushes, I get the best results from starting from a midtone!

So cool! Amazing art and process to see! I am so inspired seeing your color selection process, if I am guessing right, in the beginning you found and selected the mid tone for the figures, and then built around that with your amazing color choice and lighting? (If I may ask- Around 8sec vs 15:45, is the color of the reference dot a different color due to adjustments overtime? Or is it my poor batty eyes ๐Ÿ‘€ didnโ€™t even think about the lighting info, so good to know! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ) And the awesome sketch to color to lines, and more in a way- if I am saying right-I am finding I am doing my best work in a similar ways and personalized version of organized chaos as well- excited to try out the ideas your art gives! Also- your process videos are so mesmerizing ๐Ÿคฉ

I see, I see! Iโ€™m going to try this. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ I find safety in the many layers, ehehe. I admire your ability to create characters (๐Ÿฅฐ) thank you for sharing them!

Logan

Logan!! Thank you so much for your support!! ;A; My layers are also kind of a mess and I'm maybe a little too liberal with putting everything on its own layer (sob I'm a mess), but I generally organize them in a back-to-front way, with things further away from the viewer lower down in my layers, aha! I've seen folks work on just one or two layers and admire their ability to do that, hahaha!

Awesome work, Kira! Always been a fan. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป I have clip studio, too! I struggle with paint and layering and become lost in the chaos. I will observe how your organize it and enjoy your creations. Also, the music is cool n_n !! woot
