It's Not the Size of the Screen...

...it's the size of the screen and the resolution.
I'm working on squeezing the game's size down to less than 1GB and need a bit of help. What's the screen size you usually use for playing visual novels? If most folks are on smaller screens, I can compress the images and audio quite a bit. But if a lot of people play on bigger screens, I'll have to be more picky about where I cut back on quality.
Also, I have some notifications on the "Community" tab of Patreon but I'm unable to see whatever messages are in there because it requires a mobile app. If you've messaged me there I'm afraid I didn't get it. But please feel free to message me directly here or on Discord.
Once again, thanks. I appreciate you.

Given the incredible quality of your renders and the impressive length of the story and how many branches (and one Twig!) there are, I'd say even three or four GB would be a very reasonable download size. In these days where an average new computer game easily needs 100 GB of disc space, I'd say 1 GB is now what a floppy disc was a few decades ago. :-P PS: Only saw your newer post now, oops. So yeah, looks like the 1 GB isn't an arbitrary number, after all. :-O

2024-03-15 16:04:47 +0000 UTCIf you look at most larger games like yours anything under 3 gigs is probably about average if not under average. Honestly i wouldn't worry about it too much unless it is causing technical issues for you, or with load times or crashes. If you are seeing issues with the smaller screens then yeah i guess make a smaller variant if you want. Otherwise, you are almost done as it is anyway so i say just wait on any of that other technical stuff after you have told the story that you want to tell.

2024-03-15 15:13:27 +0000 UTCWould it be a problem to have two versions? One uncompressed (let's be honest a couple GB really isn't a problem for modern bandwidths and PCs) and one compressed for those with tablets and phones. I've got a 30" monitor and 42" gaming TV so I wouldn't want to lose fidelity.

2024-03-15 12:54:03 +0000 UTCI love that you put a guide in your picture and people are still "what do you mean?" But then again, that was also my first instinct, so I'm no better.

2024-03-15 08:09:21 +0000 UTCNo worries! If I do end up crunching the game down to where image quality is taking a hit then I will definitely have an "uncrunched" version as well for people who have room for higher quality assets.

2024-03-15 05:35:05 +0000 UTCWhat do you mean by compression? If it's more relatively heavy lossy, jpeggy type compression of all the ingame images that wouldn't sound great, if it's switching from one lossless image format to a newer, more efficient type it shouldn't be noticeable at all. I can't comment on audio much since I basically always go without. I'm not trying to hurt mobile players but I wouldn't want the game I'm playing to be reduced in quality for their convenience either. 1GB, or 2GB or more has never really been an issue for me. ...and apologies if I'm coming across as too negative.

2024-03-15 04:21:51 +0000 UTCI play on a desktop with at least a 1080p monitor. I wouldn't really be in favour of the game being shrunk to make things (potentially) easier for mobile players. It would just sound like a downgrade, even if the actual visual difference isn't that large.

2024-03-15 04:02:30 +0000 UTCI didn't really want to define these much. However you feel about the size of the screen you normally play on, I guess?
