Board Game of the Month Club Update

Hey everyone, hope all is well. :)

Just a quick update here as we are in-between a bunch of things.

February Packages

Everything is still coming together and we aren’t quite there yet, but I’m hoping to shave a few days off of each month to start to get these in line. I also started to put together a Kickstarter schedule for the next games. We will be going back to monthly campaigns starting in May, and we’l have lots of ways for you to save on shipping and all of that fun stuff. Just getting it all together now.

Upcoming games folder

If you haven’t gotten access to our upcoming games folder, here it is. If you want to try out a “no art” version of Sprawlopolis, or a few others, feel free to dig around!

And if you want to drop us some feedback on any of them, here’s a form for it.

Question of the day

I figured I’d throw a question out there, so this isn’t all about me. :)

What is your favorite big game that you would want to see distilled down to 18 cards?

We discussed Gloomhaven Wallet on twitter recently and it was hilarious. Mine wasn’t that big, but just as big of an accomplishment. It’s 504 by Freidemann Friese (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/175878/504). If you haven’t seen it, it’s a wild combination of modules that assemble to form 504 different games. Setup is a beast, but the magic of the combinations is amazing. I would love to see that done on a tiny level. What do you think would be great in a small package?

MeepleCon this weekend

Fellow Patron and new helpful hand around here, Matthew Mitchell (@hafheim13), is helping us out this weekend at MeepleCon in Las Vegas. He has a few games on hand (Avignon, Turbo Drift, Mint Julep and In Vino Morte) and will be looking for players. If you are at the show and want to meet another member of our little club, make sure you say hi.

Unpub next weekend

I’ll be at Unpub in (Baltimore-ish?) next weekend, along with many of the Button Shy designer alumni. I’m showing off two of my own designs Puppet Kingdom and Sea Control. Both of which need a lot of work in the next 7 days, but I’ve always approached Unpub as a way to test fresh designs. I’ll have a bunch of other games on hand, I’m sure and I hope to meet some of you there!

Catch you again soon!

I’d love to see an 18 card version of something like fluxx

dungeon crawler would be awesome. burgle bros comes to mind, though i have no idea how you could distill something like that into just 18 cards.

For me, games are all about the experience you get when playing. Does it really feel like you're _________. With that in mind, there is a lot that you can re-create with 18 cards. I think the feeling of being over-run you get when playing pandemic would be great for 18 cards. I'm not sure what the best mechanic is for that, but card transformation similar to Palm Island could have this effect.

Matthew Mitchell

A dungeon crawler would be amazing! I would personally love to see a wallet variation of Betrayal At the House on the Hill :)

Ryan Bennett

This is tough, a lot of games I would be interested in involve tokens and dice too. Perhpas a hidden movement game could be walletized. +1 to the wallet dungeon crawler. There is one similar to that on KS right now which involves an app.

I haven't played "The Colonists", but I might be interested in a wallet-sized version. :-D

How about Dinosaur Island? I can picture penny dinosaurs or custom token add-ons. Or Viva Java: The Coffee Game: The Dice Game: The Wallet Game? Easy to play at a coffee shop or on a coffee table!

I think having a dungeon crawler in a wallet would be great. Gloomhaven or one of those Dungeons and Dragons adventure system games (e.g. Wrath of Ashardalon). I'm imagining one side of the cards are dungeon tiles that you connect to explore the dungeon. The other side might have encounters/monsters/traps. You'd be moving your little party of heroes (tokens/coins) around the board, and trying to find the exit/treasure chest or something.

It might sound weird, but a decent little RPG system that fit in a wallet game would be cool. A micro light system, just the framework, that settings could be added in ... blah, blah, you get the idea. Think super light, beer & pretzels type rpg for one-shots. Other than that ... I'm still a big fan of the Lunch Money card game, and I don't see why a super short version of it wouldn't fit in 18 cards, sort of a lightning round/deathmatch thing.
