As someone who has experienced a lot of this loneliness by not having any real friends other than your family, it really hits home. It's not like I have nobody, I have a few people that I could consider friends but we're not as close as real life friends would be, these people are all I've met online after all. And as you said, having the ability to connect to people like that over the internet is a wonderful thing but it doesn't beat having real life friends and going out and having fun. And it just happened last year that I finally understood how much was I friends with these people, after my birthday passed without a single wish from them. I'm a person who could easily do without gifts, so I never expect them, but there's just something so heartbreaking in realizing that the people you consider your friends don't even take the effort to remember your birthday.
