Oh gosh, definitely a trip down memory lane with this one. I don't actually remember too much of the plot, but I remember really enjoying the show at the time. I had not actually heard the Japanese themes, as the series did have an English dub and a separate theme. As for recommendations, I don't know how easy it would be to find, but a series I remember watching years ago was called Kyo Kara Maoh! I remember enjoying the songs and story.
