Most of the events in Gundam media are happening in "Universal Century (UC)" timeline, but Gundam SEED is based on an alternative "Cosmic Era (CE)" timeline, so it's only loosely linked to other Gundam media. Gundam is what the large robots (or mechas) are called. The design of these Gundams is very detailed, where most of the systems, devices and weapons are well thought out, and reasonably realistic (it's still sci-fi, so there's made-up stuff too). Gundam Seed is my personal favorite of the Gundam series, although that opinion might cause some conflict among the hard-core Gundam fans, due to it taking place in alternative universe, that's less mature compared to UC universe. It's a story of relationships, warfare and politics, and how it all affects soldiers and civilians on individual level. The series itself suffers a bit from it's age, and the animation has a lot of repeated scenes in battles (similar as you could see the repeating scenes in the openings). But storywise it's a recommendation from me. And my favorite character is probably Lacus Clyne (the pink-haired girl seen ie. at 6.34).
