Tanya is using her HR middle management skills to find all the loopholes in the laws and bend the rules till they almost break to obey the letter of the law but not the spirit of the law. "It's not a war crime the first time". The brutality of war brought home in this episode in all it's harshness. Being X has now recruited his paladin to fight Tanya. Gantz shot the enemy mages, the gun he used was Tanya's so she didn't shoot him she forced him to kill the enemy mages.

Everyone knew it was wrong, even Tanya, but nobody was going to say it outright. This is, I would say, the grimmest episode of what is released, well the Movie for it's own reasons might be more-so. You commented at the start how can they smile while they're fighting, I believe someone mentioned that the empire's mages are drug-induced, plus there's likely an adrenaline high. Bit sad you skipped the special ending.
