The Apothecary Diaries episode 6 Reaction

4:17 that look of Maomao is pure evil, and her hand covering her nose so her lack of freckles wouldn't confuse her identity. Maomao's freckles are now like Clark Kent's glasses take them away and no one recognizes her.

Ah i assumed the hairpin was resolved in this episode, i forgot that we get another episode down the line where they come into play. So yeah not much information was given in this one besides they use it to recruit "talented workers" and that there is a hidden meaning to it. But it sure is important to receive one from high ranking officals like Jinshi or Lihua. Maomao consumed Poison. Poison that was meant to kill someone, i don't think Jinshi should "chill out" in that moment. It was said early that food testers don't live long and that there are reguarly attacks on the concubines. You even see how horrified other food testers are while doing their job. When you deal with potent poison time is the most important factor. If Maomao screwed up and had remaining leftovers inside her she could damage her intestines, brain and nerves.. IF she survived. As the viewers we know Maomao is awesome and skilled in her knowlage but we can't assume that everyone knows that as well especially when she tries everything to hide her skills to be less visible. Well that is atleast my personal view on that matter. :) There are a few other things culturally like the garden party and the reason to have one, who is attending and so on but the show didn't really emphatize that part at all and we focus purely on Maomao with a few sidesteps on the Lady in Waiting proxy war, they all enjoy a comfortable living inside the palace as long as the emperor is still interested in them. If one moves up to be the main wife the others will suffer the losing of the emperors favor so infact they are all enemies and at "war" with each other. Loyalty is a strong feeling, even if it isn't the right or nice thing to do. Lastly the Age of the small concubine former wife of the passed emporer, well i don't think there is much to say besides that different times and different counties and their politics play a role in that, there are still contries existent today that allow marriage with minors. It is only schoking to us "modern times" people but the general consens with few exceptions "back then" was, if a woman is old enough to menstraute she is old enough to bear children which would be around 11-13 years old. Boys had to work on farms as soon as they were able to run around and so on. You could get married a lot sooner but the "doing it together" part usually startet when the bleeding set in, so there are lots of cases where the married couple had to wait years for that. Ah and on a less dark side, young marriages were mostly a political thing, not an "attraction" thing, so influencal people married their children with other influencial people to gain status and wealth, not great but it could also be a lot worse. Now we let children be children which is great but that is "just" a modern invention, one for the better.
