It seems every reaction of Frieren ive watched no one has understood how the characters feel about what they are saying. In Japanese culture honour is still to an extent regarded as important, in western cultures honour means very little and is a vague concept to most people. Honour is a self imposed ideal, an individual is honourable because they follow a code of ethics that they keep themselves to. Culture would affect what is considered to be honourable or dishonourable. In the example of Japan in the past death was seen as preferable to dishonour. Its not about tactics or how we see it as a viewer. It is made clear that the characters see their own actions as dishonourable. Frieren says ..."But i love magic" in response to Flamme, she was immediately uncomfortable with the idea. Also after 50years of suppressing her mana Frieren could no longer say that she loved magic, that shows how much she dislikes what she is doing. Fern also seemed to understand as she didn't deny the accusation of unfairness and only stated that Frieren understood it better than anyone. The characters see their actions as dishonourable, does it mean they are wrong? no.. that is not what that means. Generally i feel that if you see your actions as dishonourable you find no pride or satisfaction in Victory, you don't want praise, but it doesn't necessarily mean you regret it either. Frieren and Fern don't enjoy battle they do it because in needs to happen, the dishonour was necessary to win, the ends justify the means but the victory doesn't feel great. Frieren didn't enjoy defeating Aura, she took no pride in it. Understand this and you will also understand her mentality better.
