I believe that part of the reason Askeladd got so irritated with Thorfinn after their duel is because I think that deep down, Askeladd sort of wants Thorfinn to kill him, hence Askeladd's story, "I'm going to tell you how to kill someone you hate". It's just like Bjorn said, Askeladd hates himself, he hates himself because he's a product of the environment he grew up in, and hes become more like the people he hates above all else. Another reason is that even though Askeladd may want Thorfinn to kill him, there is also a part of Askeladd that genuinely does want Thorfinn to move on from revenge and be better than he is now. Askeladd will always see Thorfinn as the son of Thors, a man he greatly admired, and in his mind Thorfinn is wasting his potential to be the man that Askeladd deep down wished that he could be: a true warrior.
