Crunchyroll doesn't always do the best job of translating anime from mangas, so sometime these big philosophical conversations can be a little more confusing than they have to be. But basically, willibald (the priest) was referring more to true love rather than just "love" as it's depicted in the bible. True love, meaning love everyone equally, don't hate, don't kill, don't steal, don't hate one person while loving another. The line "Death perfects a person" or "Death is the essence of love" can be understood as more than just the dead warrior that would never hate, steal, or kill again. Take Thors as an example, he spent most of his adult life killing countless people. The deaths of the people he killed, in a way, perfected Thors as a person and turned him into the model of what love should be: selling 8 sheep for a slave that was as good as dead, refusing to kill, or even harm Halfdan, (the slaves owner), refusing to kill Askeladd or his men, even when his son was in mortal danger, giving his life up so that he wouldn't have to kill any of them.
