Interestingly enough, Askeladd was holding back during the entire fight with his men. He allowed himself to be cut up a little bit to make himself appear weaker. He knew his men would shoot him with their bows if they thought he was too strong, which is why Askeladd scolded himself for losing his temper after cutting that man in half. If all 50 of his remaining men had melee weapons instead of bows, then Askeladd 100% would have been able to take them all, or at least be completely fine until Thorkell got there.
